Some of us have bikes that live outside and can't be arsed relubing the chain every time it pisses down. Smile
Personal choice, at a considerable cost in the near future.

Having said that, I'd have scrubbed a lot of that rust off on the rare occasion I did clean it though.

I hear they make those chains from melted down parts of cbf 125 bolts and the likes.

My chain looked like that after a fortnight of neglect. It's currently soaking in a pan of used engine oil. Like a health spa for parts.

How much abuse can a chain take before its fubar though? If it's just surface level rust it's alright isn't it?

I read this back and it sounds like I'm trying to convince myself I don't need a new C&S kit yet.

I've had the following conversation with people so many times I can't even remember;

"You fitted a chain and it's fallen off"

"Sorry sir, when was the chain fitted?"

"A two months ago."

"And how many miles have you done?"

"Around 500"

"And what chain lube have you been using on it?"

"I havent been putting no chain spray on it, diddn't think you had to cause it came with grease on it"

"Okay, and when was the last time you tensioned the chain?"

"Nobody told me you needed to do the chain up, I've never done it"

"Right sir, you'd need to be cleaning and lubricating & tightening the chain once a week or every 200 miles at the minimum, however during the bad weather that can increase."

"Well I aint ever done that before why do I need to do that"

"If you don't the chain will wear a lot faster and eventually come off entirely causing potential damage to the crankcases, injury and rear wheel lock ups. If you check in your owners manual then it ought to cover how to adjust it, or pop down with the bike and one of our techs can show you how to adjust it"

I do believe that some people genuinely think you just put the keys in a bike and ride it and never put anything in other than petrol. New bike owners seem to be the worst for neglecting basic maintinance.

I went to help someone 2 days ago who had posted on a local FB group that their lexmoto vixen wouldn't start. They were the exact description above. Chain was rusted through and hanging off, sprockets were fucked, bike had lived outside 3 years and never been cleaned/ACF50 treated. The guy didn't even have basic tools to unscrew the side panel. When I pointed out the chain and told him that was dangerous he responded it must be ok because the last service he had done 6 months before had adjusted it for him.

It'll be for sale for pennies soon when it fails its first MOT due to owner incompetence.

I like Iain have had the "you mean I need to maintain it " conversation so often it is not funny
What frighten me is I seen the result of a high speed chain failure it was not nice lucky the chain missed the rider while writing off a fazer !

Chain lub check adjustment once a week if used in wet every day is not too much , just a quick spray and check adjustment with boot

Makes me laugh when you see what look like nice bikes with completely fucked chains.

Some young people I know assume to lube a chain you put WD-40 on it and ride off.

Other think you put chain lube on it and ride away.

Apparently it's not common knowledge anymore to clean the chain and then lube it!

Thumbs Up

I resurectred a scooter that had been in storage a few months ago, as the owners car had died horribly. The scooter's engine siezed last week, mysteriously out of oil. Owner keept repeating 'it had an oil change when it went back on the road and an MOT a thousand miles ago' like it was a substitute for checking fluid levels. Staying away from this one. Should not have got involved.

If you have a decent chain it doesn't need doing hardly at all, I have a DIDVMX chain and a chain oiler and I adjust it every 4k miles or so. This is also my 3rd chain the bikes has ever had and it is at 75k miles. Thumbs Up

I also think a lot of chain wear prematuring because they are tightened too much, the TDM recommends 2" of movement I stick to this.

I got fed up of a fiend moaning about the state of her chain on her honda so I loaned her my chain cleaner, one of those kettenmax ones, chain brush and some paraffin. After 6 weeks it hadn't been returned so I went to get it, it hadn't even been out of the bag because she couldn't figure out how to use it Rolling Eyes

I haven't offered again.

Try soaking it in a jar of white spirit.

I just got one of those through the post this morning, ordered it 'cos I was fed up of using an old toothbrush and thought 3 sides might speed things up a bit. Are you saying they aren't any good?

I like mine, you just need to use some solvent with it.

So, for all those who said on the recent thread that covering basic maintenance on a cBt was pointless....
If somebody doesn't know, either through age, lack of experience or whatever, surely they need telling - and when better to cover basic checks than during the basic training?

Nah, they do a great job when new/clean. I'll stop off tonight and get some white spirit, thanks for the help.

I haven't bothered cleaning, lubing or tensioning my chain in the two years I've owned the bike... It's got well over 80k on the clock and I imagine the chain has never been replaced either.

And in the OP, it's fine - just a bit of flux innit.

I may have suggested that those minded to do it will find out for themselves anyway, and those that are't won't listen.

However, I would be in favour of saying loudly and slowly "Bikes aren't cars and if you neglect them or ride like a cock then you will die, if you are lucky. This ends the theory section."
