Hi all,

I have just changed my brake lines to hel braided line and oil to dot4 castrop performance.

What i noticed was, my calipers seems to be sticking. Both sides are rubbing against the disc and you can not spin the disc freely for more than half or 3/4th of a turn.
I opened both calipers and cleaned the pads and the spring ( metal peice thing) but the issue is still there.

Upon further inspection it looks as if the pads are moving side to side so when rotating forward the pads move up within theirnseat and rotating backward they move down . There is about 1cm of play.

Also worth saying i changed the caliper seals just few month ago and pistons looked ok.

Can it be the pistons?

Also i noticed one right hand side , one of the pads was worn more than the other . Could it be the piston?

1cm? Are you sure?

If the pads can move 1cm with the disc then you have the wrong pads in...

Maybe 2-5 mm. It wasn't like that at the beginning. It is ebc sintered

Just started to notice a clicking noise when i brake and realised it is the pad moving.
Moving is fine rather the sticky bit is an issue

First it was 1cm, then it was

I think you need a new ruler - get one from a stationery shop instead of the type they sell to measure dicks with Wink

IMO, anything over about 1mm is getting toward some sort of issue.

As for the sticking - I think it's something being sticky...

So do pads metal bits wear over time and have a play?

Re measuring lol, sorry i gave a big figure but rethinking it it was more like 2mm maybe

Re being sticky , what do you mean ?

It's being sticky = it's not moving as it should...

If one pad is worn more than the other in an opposed piston caliper then it probably is a sticking piston (or the pad sticking on the pins/in the caliper, but that's unlikely if the pads are slopping about). With a sliding caliper it's pretty normal.

Get the pads out, operate the brake slowly and see if one piston is coming out slower or is harder to push back in.

Edit to say - yes, the pad backing plate can (and does) wear a little on the contact points with the caliper. Development of slight play isn't usually a cause for concern unless it's excessive.

If right hand side caliper has a noticeably low pad compared to the others then remove that caliper. (Your wheel should now rotate nicely if the other caliper is ok)
Is the R6 fitted with a fixed type caliper and 4 pots that move (two on each side of the caliper)? If so it is very likely that the piston/s on the low pad need attention but all four will need checking for ease of movement

Yes it is a 4pot caliper 2 on each side on each caliper

So the way to test it is , remove the caliper and press the brake pedal to see if they are all moving evenly? If not then swap those piston/s?

Pistons look on with no rust
Is it safe to ride for a while until i sorted it out?

Push pistons back as best you can then place a piece of wood about the thickness of your disc in there to prevent shooting the pistons out of their sockets.
Gently pull back brake lever and watch pistons moving out. If they all move out at the same speed then they should be OK (unless all 4 are sticking, which is highly unlikely). Otherwise slowest moving piston(s) will be the one that's stuck. It may free up by working it in and out but the likelihood is that you'll have to remove the piston and clean up the groove that it's seal sits in.

Obviously it would be safer using fully functioning brake calipers but this condition hasn't happened overnight and it's quite likely you've been riding round on sub-standard brake action for a while.

The way I read it, is that the pads are moving when the discs/wheel is rotated.

As they are EBC, I can only assume it is because they are EBC.

If the wheel wont spin freely then the dust seal or the oil seal grooves are full of corrosion and the calipers need stripping and cleaning properly.

I'll use anything that isn't organic. Currently running on EBC HH sintered's but there are better available (Brembo and Bendix spring to mind), depends what kind of use they'll get

A warped disc will return a pulsing feeling through your lever when braking

Ah will also need to check the fluid level as it is just on max line so it could be it can't push the pistons back because no space is left for the fluid to push up
