Just looking at this:

https://www.gumtree.com/p/volkswagen/vw-golf-1.6-16v-lpg/1094720922

Any reason not to go for an LPG converted car?

Thanks

Just the three main reasons - in order of importance I'd place on them

1) Badly fitted kits. There's lots out there that have been badly fitted. Very badly fitted indeed. As in to the point of engine damage by poorly operating fuel pressure regulator overrides and the like. If you're going to get a car with it all fitted, check who it's been installed by and their credentials.
2) It's a PITA to go fill up, twice instead of once, and not all places have LPG still to this day. For example I'd have to drive ~15 miles from my house to get LPG and I'm in a densely populated area. That'd pee me off.
3) Can't go through Channel Tunnel and the like. Not really much of an issue I guess.

i had a mazda bongo van in new zealand, it was dual fuel,
was awesome for road trips, id get about 600km on lpg and another 700 on petrol,
the price to run was $40 600km on lpg and $90 for 700km on petrol
at the time,

to get the best out of lpg you really need to have it dedicated with a really high compression. a friend of mine drag races a straight 6 turbo on lpg and gets awesome results,

Used to have a grand cherokee on LPG
Main gripe was having to go out of my way to find LPG rather than being able to fill up where I pleased.

Eventually got replaced with the diesel version

I had an LPG Range Rover about 7 yrs ago so things will be different with a modern kit I'm sure. Main hassles were LPG availability and refilling was sllooooooooowwwwww.

Also they're never quite as economical as you think due to the performance loss under LPG.

I have an LPG converted Range Rover at the moment, it has pros and cons to it.

First thing, if you have an android phone download the free FillLpg app (or goto the website), it'll show every lpg filling station for your area including the price per litre.. the app version can also link directly into your satnav app to give you directions.

If there aren't enough stations local to you, or local to where you're going to be driving to regularly it's not worth it.

The advert for that Golf doesn't give any details of the LPG conversion, I'd want to know:

- Single or Multipoint gas injection (if it's a fuel injected engine you don't want a single point injection)

- size (in Litres) and position of the LPG tank, if the LPG tank is not at least the same size as the original fuel tank you're going to notice the reduced tank range.. ideally you want 20% more tank size.

- quality of installation, brands of parts used, age of installation, does the seller have the relevant system check certification?

- Is it an automatic switching system or user controlled, can they demo it working perfectly?

I'm reasonably happy with my LPG range rover - I couldn't afford to run it on petrol so this is a good compromise.

I'd wonder about why they needed to run LPG on what should be a reasonably economical eurobox though, surely it'd be wasier to just buy a diesel car? Also the Ad says it has tinted windows - definitely points to being owned by a Wayne or Barry Smile

Despite the small size, those aren't that economical, 35-38mpg really. I had one and it wasn't too bad, wasn't that much of a slouch.

Would bother with an LPG converted one though, just run it on petrol.
