Hi,

I am changing my springs in the front fork because they are too soft . I am 135 . How can i measure the existing spring rate as it could simply be my oil that needs changing and springs are fine.

many thanks

kg Very Happy

I think a machine is needed to compress it and measure the travel but was hoping there is another quick way of doing it .

also I am thinking of buying a linear ones as opposed to progressive which is what I have at the moment(bottom bit coils have shorter distance and further at the top the distance if uniform )

Can you set the preload with the adjustment you have?

Damping and spring rate are separate actions which shouldn't be confused.

Having tried some progressive fork springs on my Exup1000 I could not find a preload setting which suited my riding style. So I replaced them with Ohlins straight rate springs and setting up the preload was made much easier.

To check if springs that you have are rated for your weight, unweight the forks and measure the chrome length of the forks. Then sit on the bike with your feet off the ground while one friend holds the bike upright and another to measure the chrome part of the forks again. If the differance is less than 35mm,then either add preload via the adjusters at the top of the forks or add spacers between the fork top and the springs.

If you suspect the springs might go coil bound then buy some uprated springs from the like of Harris Performance or K-Tech.Those suppliers would alsobe able to sell you some new fork oil as well.Do not use the old oil if it has been in the forks for more than 10,000 miles
