To the cyclist that was performing some kind of balancing act at the traffic lights meaning I couldn't safely pass as the lights changed, who then proceeded to hog the right hand side of the lane meaning I couldn't pass safely, don't call me an idiot when I choose to pass on your inside leaving you ample gap and even waiting for you to see me on your left before making my move. If you see that some one is coming up on your inside why would you move in front of them? That makes you the idiot IMO.

I'm sure the child whos life you were rushing to save is grateful that you made every effort to pass the cyclist as quickly as possible.

I learned something new the other day!

On my way home, I spotted a neighbour in front of me on his bike, who had come to a stop at a pedestrian crossing.

He was wobbling about like crazy - apparently trying to stay upright without putting a foot down to steady himself - he looked completely demented!

I later asked him why he didn't just put one foot down - and he said he couldn't.

He said that he has some kind of fitting on the bottom of his shoes (can't remember what he called it) that slots onto the pedals, making it difficult to get his feet on and off the pedals.

Seriously?

Is that normal, or was he having me on?

Cleats are very normal, but not particularly difficult to get in and out of unless you are a mong.

I would guess 90% are fine but the other 10% are arrogant stupid twats who are lorry fodder but can't seem to appreciate what risks they are taking.

Do cleats improve matters? I never remember having a problem before I had access to motorised transport. I used to do a paper round on an extremely heavy suspension bike with only plastic spikes on the pedals to keep my feet in place. No problems despite going out in ice, snow and heavy rain as well as having to tackle hills that were about a 1:4 gradient.

Cleats are very good,

It's not about holding your foot in place it's about being able to pull the pedal up as well as push it down, you'll go further with cleats than without.

And as about they are easy to get out of if you are not a mong, getting into them is more difficult, but still easier than pratting about not stopping.

You should have tried to antagonise him to cause a confrontation and filmed the whole episode, so you could edit it in your favour then post on Youtube.
Apparently it's the done thing amongst certain militant groups of cyclists, maybe the motorists should adopt the same approach?

Most are OK, but there really are some twats who seem to go out of their way to try to p1ss motorists off at every opportunity. And also some adults, for whom the pavement is their "battlefield" as they stamp their authority over pedestrians.

I do remember one once though, who was riding quite sensibly on the road, in the dark, with lights and obeyed a red light. They do still exist.

Nothing wrong with riding with cleats in town. Once you've got used to them. Falling over at the lights because you forgot to release them - not so good. That was 1998, though. I have no trouble releasing them to put a foot down. I'll usually only stay clipped in when I'm stopping for a moment while checking it's clear at a junction - same as I wouldn't put a foot down on the motorbike if I approach a junction just for the sake of putting a foot down. In fact, the only fault I got on my mod 2 was for putting a foot down when I could have just gone. Track standing because he can't unclip suggests he needs to practice more.

Riding fixed gear as I usually am - you try doing 200rpm down a hill without cleats.

cleats used downhill are for sickos, they type or have hot wax poured on their nipples during sexy time

as already said, cleats on the road allow you to pull the pedal up as well as push down, the shoes are rigid too so you get more POWA - also make you walk like you have shat your self too....which is nice
