Specifically the After Effects kind?

I'm trained as a 3D animator but gigs are few and far between and could do to broaden my employ-ability. Would ideally like to become self employed. There seems to be a demand for AE animators out there for the last few years.

Anyone know any good resources to get me started?

YouTube has some GREAT stuff, there's a lot of tutorials just for those who are getting started. Just search, and you will find Smile

Aye there seems to be an abundance of stuff, but wondered if anyone had any personal recommendations. I've signed up for a free trial on Digital Tutors. I'm familiar with Premiere and Photoshop so it isn't completely greek to me.

I noticed a few jobs, including the gig I used to work at seem to like using C4D and After Effects, any particular reason? Why not Maya/Max etc.?

The equipment I work with uses Adobe After Effects, so we're hoping that more people will buy it...

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I would recommend Video Copilot. Just start at the beginning and work your way through. You say you're familiar with some Adobe programs already so some of it may be a bit basic for you to begin with but as ever it's good to refresh basics and then be able to build on it quickly.

Along with Video Copilot there's: Ch-Ch-Check It, Tara Arts Movie, Morocco Tutorials, Edge-CGI and many, many more.

Cost? 3DSMax is insanely expensive to licence along with the other big 3D packages, Cinema4D is not. It's been many years since I was doing 3D animation but my favoured program was C4D due to its cost and easy of use, it was very limited compared to Max at the time (2000) but came a long way shortly after. It's rendering engine was also infinitely faster than any other package at the time, if you can use 3DSMax though you can use C4D as it's a breeze. After effects I never used but why use 3D rendering to create post effects when specialist applications do the job so much better and faster.
