So, I've got my hands on a bike with fairings and my current luggage is of the throwover material variety, these ones -

So what's the best way of protecting paint work from the rubbing of the straps? It wasn't an issue with the Street Triple as that was Matte paint, which doesn't rub off easily, the new bike is lacquered at the back.

I've got some of that, my worry was the possibly of dirt and dust sticking to it, rubbing in to the lacquer on the fairings.

Clear vinyl wrap stuff. Previous owner put a couple small bits on fork lowers, looks like new while surrounding paint has been destroyed by stones.

Yeah, clear vinyl or as its being hidden, any old colour. Peels off and is normally residue free.

However, masking tape works just as well.

Would that 'Helicopter Tape' stuff work? I've got a big roll of it sitting around somewhere. Didn't want it going all yellow and tacky.
