I know it doesn't help, but my similar laptop didn't seem to need anything special doing so I guess not a Windows 8 thing.
Could it be a router setting?

nah worked well with the router yesterday on win7
i just tried to download something with vuze leap (another torrent client) and it worked fine,
so it must be a utorrent/win8/hp combo

Have you tried the inbuilt connection test?

Its under setup guide, and at the bottom will give you an option to run test.

Report back the results and I'm sure someone can help.

yep done the test.

all good on both the upload test and the network test,
both come back as a pass,

at the bottom of the torrent window,
it says DHT: waiting to log in
it does this for all the torrents,

as for port forward, im not sure what that even is Very Happy

i tryed down grading to an earlier version of utorrent just to make sure it wasnt an issue with the current version, but didnt help

cheers for the help guys

Make sure you have UPNP enabled on your router, and you have the network type set to "Private" within Windows 8.

this will allow windows to open the port requested by utorrent.
