I was riding today and practising my leaning skills on corners. Then I took it into town to the pressure wash and gave it a good scrub before riding home. So I turn off into my friends road where I keep my bike as he's got a large garage. I downshift to first and... Nothing happened. It was all rev and no go. I free wheeled to his and tried again. I let the clutch out slowly while applying throttle and a most alarming sound came from deep in my little bikes belly. I quickly shifted to neutral and walked it into the garage. Anyways I heard parts that should be attached to things rattling around in the gearbox. I had problems previously with the bike slipping from second into neutral. And its gearbox oil was changed in October. I checked the level last week and it was fine. A new gearbox assembly is 40 monies online so not so bad.
The bike has 21k on the clock but its still a bit gay that I've only had it since October and it's already suffered a catastrophic failure. The top end seems to be fine however, although there's a rattle from the cam chain. I'm just lucky it happened a few hundred feet from his house rather than miles and miles away Laughing

Maybe but it was slipping right after I got it, before I fell off numerous times.

Its gearbox oil, you say? Thinking

While it's apart, take the opportunity to clean the internal oil strainer.

Slipping or sometimes getting neutral on downshifts?

Slipping into neutral during upshift from first. It was slipping down randomly recently as well.

Ah, I wonder what he's using in the primary drive casing. Some people swear by ATF.

I highly doubt that since replacing the thrust washers alone on my CR125 gearbox cost more than that. Wink

Infact, that had broken two cogs & I recall pricing them up at £80 a piece at trade monies.

I'm aware of that. But my bike isn't new either and has 21k on the clock so its unlikely to be in worse condition than mine is. Its also advertised as intact and the company selling it seems to have a reasonable return policy if its flawed. Also I'm a youth so I cannot afford a brand new gearbox assembly from Honda Smile

And I should clarify when I said new I meant new to me not as in its a new part. My bad Very Happy

In B4 front sprocket come off.

Spontaneous, catastrophic gearbox failures are very rare. Clutch failures less so. Chain/sprocket failure is common. Any of the three could cause a total loss of forward drive.

So, before you go ordering a gearbox, I'd get that front sprocket cover whipped off and have a look to make sure it's a) Still on the splines and b) Has teeth on it.

Thank you! That's really useful advice, I'll take a look. But I am doubtful its that because I replaced the sprockets and chain in October. But I'll certainly take a look thanks Very Happy

Seen this on a CBR125 years ago, Honda were about to replace the gearbox under warranty. The foot rest hanger was loose.
