Probably a bit of a bone question but I'm new to all this road bike lark.

When do you generally make the switch from Winter to Summer gear? I won't be riding until March so I'm unsure of whether to buy both Summer and Winter gear or just get Summer stuff and wait until it starts getting icers again to buy the winter stuff.

Cheers in advance

I wear the same gear all year. I just add extra layers both under and over it in the winter.

As stinkwheel said.

My kit is more about wet/dry than summer/winter. If the weather looks good then it's leather jacket and Kevlar jeans with some old DPM goretex trousers carried, if it's going to rain then it's head to toe in textiles. Cold just add more jumpers underneath.

Forget winter/summer gear.

Just wear what suits the weather of the day....

When you feel cold wear winter gear and when you feel hot wear summer gear. People feel hot and cold a different rates.

I wear my goretex jacket, when commuting, about 11 months of the year. For about 4 of those months, I include the winter lining. The other month (cumulative) I wear my summer touring jacket, which has loads of vents and isn't waterproof at all.

When I go out for a weekend ride, I wear my leathers. If it's very cold or wet, I don't generally go out for a weekend ride.

When I tour in the summer, I either take my summer touring gear + waterproofs, or more recently, I wear my leathers and bring waterproofs.

When I tour at any other time than summer, I wear my goretex jacket with matching trousers.

Most gear can be adapted in either direction. My goretex jacket can turn the front zip into a long thin mesh, so it's actually fairly well ventilated. But different gear has different optima.

Wear according to the weather you expect.

When winter comes... Hoodies get worn, liners go back into textiles, handlebar muffs are put on & I wear a neck warmer.

When summer comes, I reverse the above & occasionally wear my leather bottoms.

I got textiles that seem to be a good middle ground, the only thing I change from winter to summer is my gloves. Leather for textile waterproof ones. My jacket and trousers have thermal linings you can put in them but they're plenty warm with them out.

Given that we can have four seasons in one day, having a seasonal wardrobe seems a curious position.
