Posted: 14:57 - 22 Jan 2015 Post subject: Bike runs worse after getting carbs balanced |
 |
|
I had the carbs balanced on my bike this morning at a local independent dealer. Reason I wanted them balanced was because of excessive vibes whilst riding and an erratic idle. When I went to pick the bike up they said the carbs didn't need much balancing and that they were fine, but my idle was still hunting. They suggested a carb strip down and ultrasonic clean, fair enough I thought. Now after riding it, it's worse than when it went in! The revs stick and the idle is worse. I've checked all the cables and they are routed fine, the throttle snaps back with no probs. The revs stick when in neutral and you rev it and when you're riding and you pull the clutch in. They basically stick and die down slowly. Idle screw is set correctly, it had new spark plugs the other day.
Any ideas? I know I should take it back but I don't want to start 'one of those' things with a dealership. They have a good rep and are usually very good. Plus I'd imagine they'd only tell me it needs the carbs cleaning, but I want to know what they've changed to make the bike worse. Bike is a 1998 GSX600F. ____________________ I want your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle.

I guess that would be best.
Forgot to add there's now a ticking noise on the engine that wasn't there before. ____________________ I want your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle.

And from their point of view:
Bloke brings in 17 year old bike, says "Do X because I reckon that will fix Y and Z".
X is done as per instructions.
Bloke comes back in giving it "Y and Z are worse now! What did you do?"
So I'd stress the important of opening with a smile and "I'm not blaming you or looking for a free fix, I'm just asking..." ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Another forumite had a similar problem with their 600 Bandit not so long ago.The symptoms appeared to be leaking inlet manifold seals between the carbs and the cylinder head.
If you spray something like WD40 around each manifold in turn with the engine running and you can hear a noticeable increase in revs for a short time, then the 'O' rings need replacing

And this is why I and many experienced professional get very wary when punter says " do this "
Once you touched their bike it your fault in their eyes !
Funny I had a bandit in late last missing bailey customer said "Balance the carbs"
My reply "no way I take the job the fix the misfire I am not working on your best guess or go else where "
He got me to sort it
New air filter other black and sticky
New plugs others killed by dead air filter
ran sweet
Customer happy ____________________ Dave

Just to be clear I didn't demand a carb balance and not take no for an answer. I did explain my bikes symptoms first and they agreed a carb balance was the way to go. I was fully open to any suggestions from them They're qualified, I'm not and this isn't intended to be a pop at them. They've obviously disturbed something though to cause the revs to stick.
Fizzer Thou, I'll give that a shot, cheers ____________________ I want your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle.

Took the bike back to them today and they said to leave it with them until Monday and they'll ring and let me know what they found. I was polite with them and fair play to them they seemed genuinely wanting to help. Just a matter of waiting now and see what they find. ____________________ I want your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle.

Just an update, the dealer fixed the bike free of charge as "It's our error, well not an error but it happened whilst in our care". Apparently one of the rubber caps on the vacuum take off point on one of the carbs had perished and the mechanic hadn't noticed when he put it back on. ____________________ I want your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle.
