Hi,

I've recently passed my A2 and I've been looking for a bike for a few months with the intention of purchasing the right bike when I find it. I've found a reasonable bike that's nearly £2k.

I'm 19 and live with my parents, they charge me nothing to live with them so I try and keep them happy. I work 1 day a week and go to college for the other 4.

I've managed to be relatively good at saving my money for years, now I feel like I want to invest/ enjoy my savings a little and buy the bike I've found. I've already bought a car that I currently use so their excuse is I'm wasting my money on something that isn't a necessity. They want me to save for a deposit on a house.

This has lead to a bit of an argument and I wanted to ask you guys if what I'm doing sounds unreasonable to you?

If you will enjoy it, get it Thumbs Up

You're 19; spend some time and money having fun and trying things before rushing to save a deposit and getting buried under a mortgage Shocked

Fairly decent of them to let you stay there for free though, so maybe come up with some good justification to appease them Razz something about paying a little extra for a 'safe and reliable' bike and it being a good investment - saving lots of travel time you can productively spend on other things. And how it will 'pay for itself eventually' with reduced fuel/parking expenses over the years Whistle

From their perspective, you've bought yourself another (and this time they think, dangerous) toy while living in their house at their expense. No wonder they're pissed off.

Not only that, you've now extended the time you're going to continue to live with them (rent free). This has pissed them off too.

They obviously want to see you securely settled in your own place for your sake and theirs too.

The onus here is on you to be clear what your priorities are and stop taking advantage of them.

Oh yes and grow up.

Is your name Kevin (the teenager) Patterson by any chance?

Thumbs Up I've tried all the reduced costs stuff but they seem adamant it's a waste, I am grateful for the free living. They even let my 30 year old sister live here for free, she's a teacher and is renting out her own house!

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't acting like a spoiled brat, I'll go ahead with it then Smile

haha, no it's not Kevin but I do love that film. I've still got a moderate amount (for my age) in savings so I'm not blowing it all. I see it as a one off purchase, I'll recoup the majority of the cost of the bike and insurance whilst I continue to work so it shouldn't be detrimental to my savings towards a deposit. I've also thought uni isn't for me and would rather go for an apprenticeship (whereby most I'm looking at supply accommodation). I appreciate what their views are towards getting rid of me but I doubt it'll make much difference.

At the end of the day - its hardly like you're burning 2k that could go on a house deposit - the bikes going to probably hold the majority of its value if you don't slide it down the road / insurance isn't horrific. If and when you need a deposit - sell bike - spend money.

With house prices at the moment and your age, you're not realisitically going to get a mortgage particularly soon I imagine - why go for years without a bike just to have some money sat in a bank doing nothing.

If its just about money surely the bikes a lot cheaper to run and insure than the car anyway, so it would be financially sensible to sell the car and get a bike Razz?

You're parents are subsidising your sisters housing empire, they sound like pushovers!
Why do you need their approval, moral or otherwise?
Buy bike, ride bike, enjoy YOUR life, it's for living, as the saying goes!

Typical situation;

Young lad wants a motorbike, parents try to over rule and disagree.

Even when I had saved up the entire amount to purchase my 125cc from the dealership brand new my father tried to tell me it still wasn't happening, then when I turned up to his work place suddenly him and his work mates liked the bike and started talking all about them.

It's your money and your choice.. as long as you can afford other things like the service costs, insurance, fuel etc then you have no issue..

IMO; £2,000 for a A2 bike is reasonable, can get plenty of choices for that, my estimated is just below that when I take my A2 and hunt for bikes, with a "Suzuki GSF Bandit" being my current bike to aim for.

You already have a car so there is a "if.. " and a "but..", honestly it depends on in you're comfortable spending a huge amount of money on a bike and how much use your going to get out of it, at the moment I'd say wait.. just because of the snow etc.

Get a bike when the weathers passed (or store it in a garage as SORN).

I wouldn't stop going on about how much I wanted my own bike and now I've got one I see it as a suitable, appropriate, mature investment.

+ House/flat prices aren't getting cheaper anytime soon, you're ready to move out when you can afford, without flat sharing most people can't afford it until they're 20-30 (and that's with a mortgage).

I hadn't read your second post or your replies when I posted.

I have an entirely different view having read what you said. Although your parents do sound as though they're very supportive as long as they approve of what their offspring do, particularly in respect of your sister!

Go ahead, enjoy. Just don't fall off/crash it or you'll have to put up with them saying " Told you so."

As an investment it will perform incredibly badly, in fact even with the current interest rates I expect you'd get a better return by putting the funds in a bog standard savings account.

It's their house so it's their rules.

What bike is it you've found?

What are your intentions for after finishing college? Your income is sufficient to pay for running the bike?

They want you to save for a house deposit and you want to buy a bike. You could compromise and do both by spending less on the bike so that you've got something to start your savings and saving a fixed amount each month would help keep your parents happy.

If you buy bike and your parents got pissed off and kicked you out then you won't be able to afford much after paying the rent for a crappy little bedsit.

Play your cards right and you'll be able to keep living with your parents rent free as well as getting a bike. Them letting you living with them rent free could quite well be that they want you to build up some savings rather than having to be paying lots of money each month to some landlord.

Rent plus household bills plus living expenses soon add up so don't underestimate how much you're saving by living with your parents rent free.

Also, you say you work 1 day a week and go to college for the other 4... please do correct me if I'm wrong but I think there's a couple of days each week that are unaccounted for. Wink Razz

-The bike is a DRZ400, seller is looking for a quick sale and comes with some spares that I could sell to recoup some of the money.

-Intentions after college are getting an Advanced apprenticeship (£200-£300 p/w and hopefully near by or with accommodation)

-I've got a 125 that I'll be getting roadworthy and selling whilst I'm on the DRZ. Worst case scenario if I need the money I'll sell the bike or car?

-The weekend I have off but always seem to use that time to do coursework.

There will always be another bike that's a good deal.

Selling your 125 first could be a good way of getting your parents more on your side.

If you get an apprenticeship nearby then you're going to want to still be in their good books if you want to live rent free. Wink

Do you need the car as well as a bike?

All very helpful points to consider Thumbs Up

No I don't need both a car and a bike, something inside me is saying get rid of the car Twisted Evil but I know that's not the sensible option. I'm going to get them on my side first then Smile

Sell the car. Not only is the bike now a necessity, but you've increased your savings and therefore decreased the time you will be living with your parents.

You only work one day a week and can afford a car and a bike with tax and insurance! Just how many sailors do you have to suck off to pay for that lot?

Sure do, apart from my mum paying for half the car, but we agreed to split the money when it comes to sell and she get's use of the car. I pay for tax, insurance, fuel, MOT's etc out of a mixture of both my savings and my wage. I try and keep costs under £50 a week (my wage) and not touch my savings, unless making one off purchases such as the bike.

It's easier to get forgiveness than it is permission.

Your parents will forgive you in time.

Buy the bike.

You are spoilt and self-indulgent.

I say this not judgementally, just so that you can make your decision based on the facts.

Keep costs under £50 a week Shocked What car have you got cause even now it costs me around £70 to fill up my C-Max. And you pau insurance and tax etc. out of this £50 a week. Your sums don't add up mate.

I am making an assumption here, but I would say that at 19 your college course will be finished this year.

Hopefully you have some concrete plans on what you are going to do when that is finished in regards to a full time job??

Once this has been achieved you will be in a better situation to make decisions about where you live, be that at your parents house or in your own accommodation.

Either way it is getting to that time where you should be paying your way in life.

I'm not even going to comment about your sister!

As to having a car and two bikes on £50 a week. I suspect something has to give, so get arse into gear and sell the 125, enjoy the bike and get some decent grades in your college course.

Communicate with mum and dad your plans and that will help the situation.
