Tin hats on everyone!

Been musing about the looming world economic reset that is due any day now. What with deflation, oil prices, Russia crashing, Greek default, Eurozone crashing etc surely the day is not far off when society breaks down and the supermarket shelves are empty?

We've just done an exercise into the logistics of buying and storing 3 months food supplies, so that we wouldn't have to join the food riots that will inevitably ensue.

Workings out can be supplied if requested, but the most surprising cost was the £78 we estimated we'd need to spend on (real not instant) coffee to keep us going. That's out of a total estimated cost of just under £400.

We didn't include alcohol in the plan but included tinned stuff and long-life dried goods.

So, what would your cant-do-without item be when the sh1t hits the fan?

I can live on very little food it seems. I can go without a lot of things on top of that - chocolate, tea coffee, cheese, milk, heck most meat if there is vegetables about.

at one point I was living off of rice, tinned beans, bread, tinned chilli and pasta and only once eating every couple of days - I should be fine with whatever I can get my hands on

If you stay in your house sat on 3 months of food after shit hits the fan so badly you need to do that you are going to get looted.

My plan is live in a fairly remote location and just find others to pillage from when I need shit nature doesn't provide.

To be honest, if the world goes to shit that much, it wouldn;t seem like it'd be getting rosy and jolly again anytime soon. I think I'd rather invest in shotguns and bullets, see how long I continued to think it was worthwhile carrying on until I decide to "opt out" and stick the barrell in my gob Mr. Green Thumbs Up

People aren't panicking anywhere NEAR as much as they were four or even two years ago. The Russian thing is good for Ukraine, whereas with high oil prices there is incentive for Russia to invade, and money to pay the soldiers.

Currently Putin will have to go full on 'austerity' which will more than likely mean no invasion.

As for the Eurozone, we're not part of it, and they now have loads of mechanisms to cope with a greek default. The greeks will do what Merkel says, and if they don't then it'll be messy for them, but probably not for the rest of the EU.

Nothing happened in 2008, nothing happened in 2010 and nothing happened in 2012. The situation is a million times better now. If you're going to worry about anything, worry about the government spying on us, and worry about an islamic uprising. It's not worth worrying about Russia or the EU.

Seems to me Putin hasn't learned the lessons of the Cold War. He still seems to think that the whole world turns on what Russia does. He can make himself a problem for others, but in the long run I think it will only go badly for him. Isolationist policies never work out well.

an islamic uprising.

I don't think this is a major worry either. Terrorism worldwide could escalate much further and still wouldn't threaten a wealthy nation's way of life. And most Islamic countries have too many splits and differences among themselves to really be an effective builder of empires. Al Qaeda has largely taken a back seat to IS now. And IS supporters are still a tiny minority among the world's Muslim population.

But if for some reason everything turned to shit, you'd be surprised how well I can do on endless packets of Mini Cheddars Very Happy

Better safe than sorry.

Indeed; I was reading The Death of Grass recently which postulated this exact scenario - those that made a bit of an effort were killed or relieved of their hoardings by those that hadn't.

You risk starting the Great War of the Greasy Spoon. Think carefully before you take this dangerous path, for you know not where it will end.

You are perfectly welcome to avail yourself of the other non-bacony flavoured pork.

He is only allowed bacon if it is in a sandwich.
And you need opposable thumbs for making sandwiches.
So he is also at the mercy of Those-Who-Would-Make-Sandwiches-of-Bacon

He keeps telling me he wants to be called Behemoth, but in order to do this, I make him dress in a cat outfit.
