I was out for a ride this morning on the RS and after about an hour I noticed my speedo wasn't working. At the time I figured it was just a broken cable but I guess not since I took it off and it seemed fine, and I went out later for a few minutes and the mileometer is still working. Confused

Also the needle bounces around between 20-30mph on the clocks when I'm going at 70 odd, and just sits at 0mph at lower speeds.

I'm just wondering if there's any obvious explanations or do I need to get the fairing and clocks off to have a look around?

For me (on my TZR, exactly those symptoms) the speedo gear was shot and needed replacing (caused by dodgy mechanics fitting front wheel back on clumsily Thumbs Down), so if you've had the front wheel off recently I'd look at that. Unless of course your bike doesn't have a front wheel speedo gear, in which case, ignore me Very Happy

My tzr clocks did that right after i turned them upside down Confused

And then like everything on my bike, sprayed in WD-40 and it worked again Idea

I would go ask a garage first, as replacing the clocks will give you a different mileage readout, and will make buyers suspicious.

Just try driving around for a bit (slowly, obviously) and see if it fixes itself.

Chances are, your speedo drive is all mangled up, they are prone to breaking. Same happened to mine a few weeks ago, same symptoms only my mileometer wasnt moving either. Unscrewed the cable and twiddled it round, all worked fine, so it was only going to be the drive. Cost an evil £40 brand new but all works fine again. The old one was all twisted and mangled where it locked up. Was only without it for a few days until I got the fresh new one delivered. Only took about 30 mins to fit as well, not a hard job at all.

i had that problem with my bike if you look at the bike face on and look at the right hand side where the fork meat the wheel you'll see a silver/ muddy little dome thing with a thin metal peg sticking in to the hub of the wheel (or where the cable fits on the cable endto makeit easy) there is a grease nipple on there try pumping a bitof grease in before you go out and blow £40 on a new drive unit. mine did exactly the same until i changed that now it works fine just the rest of the bike to sort out now... Any one good at explaining how to fix a gearbox

I dont have a speedo drive. But when I did. The needle used to get to 20 - 30 and bounce around. I replaced the speedo cable and it fixed it. Sometimes the square blob on the end of the speedo cable rounds off.

Cheers for the replies guys. Thumbs Up

Having been into college today I've realised that although the mileometer is still going up, it is effectively dead as it's way under-reading. Oddly last night it didn't seem to be but I only went around the block quickly to check it. Big relief, cause now it could easily enough be the speedo drive or a problem with the connection to the clocks (the rs seems to have some weird setup there) so it's a lot less likely to be a problem with the clocks themselves. Phew. Smile

Will be having a poke around later when it's not dark and wet. I'll try the extra grease idea, would be ace if i can fix it without spending anything.
