Hey,

Looking for a bit of help! Late last year i had a crash round on a roundabout and has dropped my cornering confidence a lot and still not feeling good when turning corners! Does anyone know any good sites which can offer help or can anyone give me some advice? I'm not looking for knee down stuff, just to corner more confidently!

Many Thanks
Mark

I've been through the same thing mate, it's kinda natural. I totally lost confidence in using my brakes as I always felt as though I would lock the wheels up...wasn't nice.

The only advice that I can really offer is to just get out there and keep riding, although it's not really the right conditions out there right now.

What part of the corner-taking are you most anxious/nervous about?

It's mostly mid corner, i feel a little nervous about brakes too, but can find myself going fairly slow round the corners, its like i feel im mid corner and dont want to drop the bike again! Roundabouts are a good example, i've attached a drawing of my route from last night which was rather bad!

Thanks

Right, can't get the picture to work so i'll try and describe!
I approach the rounadout and take the third turn which is like a right turn, except with roundabout in way! I move into the roundabout and as i near turn i start to drift out of position towards the outside and like the other night i was going off before the turn and had to pull myself back in to get through the street!

On my sig is a site full of info on rideing, all very interesting stuff, more than one occasion i could have been in serious trouble if i'd not been following some of this...

When your going arorund a corner the moe your leaning the less tyre surface is on the road = less grip, positioning is important too, try to be where you can see as much as possible but not mean you need to turn more sharply or put yourself in the path of oncomeing traffic (seeing as not everyone is so carefull about keeping in the lines)

Higer revs will help keep the bike up, as will takeing the corner reasonably fast/confidently...

What you could try is spending some time in a big clear car park rideing slowly in increaceingly tighter turns then biger turns... get a feel for what you can and can't get away with cornering and brakeing wise (without the added pressuire of traffic behind you)

Practice some emergency stops while your at it too, it will give you an idea of just howmuch of a handfull you need(or not) to grab to get you stopped...

What bike do you ride? somebody suggested a track day before, or maybe a supermoto track day?

Hey,
Thanks for the link lots of good stuff on it, i'm slowly reading through it! The car park idea i'm looking into and thinking of best car parks nearby. I ride a Sachs XTC125 at the moment so not really good for track days, but have thought about hiring a bike for one, it seems good Laughing Can these help you learn more about riding?

Thanks again

my mate fell off on so many corners, and his confidence went also, he found the best thing to do was to follow me around nice and slowly, and then gradually i would speed up around corners, and then he stopped puting out his feet aswell, it worked for him

I have similar feelings at the mo. Came off on a corner on my third(?) time out after CBT. I quickly got back up to my previous level of cornering ability (shite) and I am now working on getting the confidence / skill to corner at a reasonable pace.

I have been preoccupied with articles about counter-steering and the like, but I'm sure the only real way to improve is to ride more. I can't wait to try out counter-steering though, so you should check that out if you don't already know how to do it properly. The best expanation I can find is the one on that website in zero's sig.

Good luck Thumbs Up

Make sure your tyre pressures are correct and the wheels are properly aligned. If they are off, sometimes only by a little, the bike will feel really odd.

Best thing is to go out and follow a more experienced rider for a bit (providing they aren't a lunatic) so you get your road positioning and speed on the approach corners correct. If you get these right, the rest follows on naturally.

well, as someone who is about to get on a bike properly for the first time (maybe this should be in the newbie forum), but my cager instuctor told me that I should really only brake in a staight line. i.e. I shouldnt be breaking when I'm cornering.

*I'll get my coat*

Correct, so leave the coat on the peg. You can get away with a little back brake (so called 'trail braking') to steady the back end or if you are coming in too hot but as a general rule, all the braking should be done before you turn into the corner then apply the power as you go through. "Slow in, fast out. Fast in, never out"

You can get away with some crazy shit on trail bikes and supermotos with the front brake mid-corner but it is not for the inexperienced.

I bolloxed my confidence a few years back, found buying a new bike helped cure it. Laughing

But seriously...

- Keep at it

- If you know someone good who'll take you out on the back of a bike, do it

- If you trust someone to ride your bike while you watch, do it

I say this cos I found seeing someone else do stuff on my bike taught me that *it* could do it and helped me convince myself that I could make it do it.

Main thing is just time though. And some half decent weather. Thumbs Up

i think any type of crash whacks ur confidence big time
theres usually a reason why u crashed
whether it be
diesel
drain
cold tyres
you have to think to yourself why i crashed
then work on not doing it again

Might not be the best weather but if you can get out there and conquer corners in these conditions you'll have no problems when the roads dry up.

Also, you might be tempted to look down at the front wheel rather than where your going. Bad idea, always look where your going, as in thro the bend..

And try to relax, being tense on the bike won't get you smoothly round bends... Thumbs Up
