Luckily for me (but not my mechanic) it happened on a test ride after some work so I'm not picking up the bill.

I've had similar things not only go through the tyre but through an alloy car wheel too.
Not particularly big but I've pulled a bullet casing out of a tyre.

once had a fairly large bolt go through.

Sucks as a nail you can pull and plug (and do) but a bolt is just gonna cost you a new tyre.
