This weekend im looking to purchasing a H reg,Honda NSR. I have never ridden a geared bike before and im a bit scared of looking a complete and utter fool. I have done my cbt and have good road awareness due to riding a scooter for the past 6 months. Im gonna have to learn how to change gears very very fast. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Hi

dont worry about it i went from an Italjet formula 50lc scooter to an aprillia RS125. the best advice i was given was to increase your revs and let your clutch out slowly until the clutch bites then slowly increase the revs and slowy release the clutch. once your moving shifting up and down is easy just close the throttle pull the clutch in select your gear release the clutch and open the throttle eventually you'll find just where the sweet spots are on the gear changes where you can shift down to get instant power without hitting the redline and yourr starts will be smoother quicker and fun just be careful not to overload the revs and lose control on the start as all hell can break loose. in no time you'll be beating chav's in there modyfied corsa's even though hes got 10 times more power

Thanks,so pretty much like a car clutch in select gear, find bite and slowly let the clutch out increasing the revs nice and smoothly as i go. (Reminder to self, the left lever is the clutch Laughing ) Should i walk the bike 2 miles back to mine or ride it? I wont have insurance on it! So thats one problem!

i would say ride it but no insurance means a heafty bollocking by the police so i'd walk it it aint worth the risk of loosing your licence. as for the left lever being to clutch yeah remember that the first thing i did was come to a set of traffic lights thinking i was on the scooter and pulled the rear brake lever ... i mean clutch leaver lucky for me i sailed throught the lights at 40mph just as the lights turned red so i didnt hit anything but i could of been completly fubar'd if it had been 5 seconds later o and when you go round a corner dont pull the clutch in you'll shit your self and get a familiar feeling of that curbs getting very close here it comes and the next thing you know it'll be sky .... road..... sky..... grass(if your lucky)...sky.....hedge(if your lucky again if not it'll probably be a wall or another car)....ambulance ( if your really unlucky and get the road then a car then the wall.

Get insurance for it then!!!

Now!

Don't EVER ride without insurance, it is illegal and quite rightly so. Smile

So you're suggesting riding two miles on public roads as your first go on a geared 125...without insurance.

I can't see much good coming out of that situation, to be honest. If I were you, I'd push.

Riding a geared bike is so simple, I was exactly the same when I first got on one. I thought everyone would laugh at me, but I took to it like a fish in water.

Funny!....I did exactly that on my CBT with my instructor screaming Praying "CLUTCH!,CLUTCH!,CLUTCH!,CLUTCH!" stayed on the bike but ended up on the opposite pavement, requiring new underwear![/img]
i remember doing it round a really tight bend, DOWNHILL. i just kept getting faster and faster and leaning further and further over, probably wasnt really going that fast anyway as id been riding for about a week, but it felt fast enough at the time. i knew what i was doing wrong but i was scared to let the clutch out incase i locked the back wheel. oh well i wont be doing that agin!

Yeah,i think i'll probably push,it'll keep me fit anyway and learn the weight of pusing the bike!Im gonna be sensible when i get this bike because i want to get my test done this summer. Gonna be a scary step from a 125 scooter to a geared bike.

Be aware it's also illegal to push a bike without insurance and wearing a helmet.

I can't think of a better cop magnet either.

May I suggest you sort out insurance before you pick it up? Or get someone else to pick it up for you? Maybe even a trailer or van.

On the issue of gears, go to a local car park, and take as long as it takes, spend 20 minutes just taking off. Then spend 20 minutes practising first to second. You'll pick it up in no-time.
