Back in June 2012, I started this thread about how I may have developed an unmentionable lust for a Honda Deauville.
It was an educational thread, with people like Teflon-Mike and Lord Borg of Roger - as well as many others - weighing in with their thoughts.
Time passed, memories faded, I plodded on with my GZ125 Passive Aggressor while my frothy imagination allowed other bikes to fall under my hot, fervid gaze. K75s, K100s, R1100RTs, ST1100s - I even had a steamy imaginary fling with an ST1300 at one point, though not for long because I felt that particular mistress may well be too expensive.
All the while though, the Deauville stayed faithful in my imagination, a useful size for a first big bike, legendary reliability, great economy, not terrible looking. More home cooking and comfortable sex than a tray of oysters and a surprise finger up the bum, if that makes sense.
Fast forward to the present, my circumstances have changed. I have a full time job, a full UK motorcycle licence but haven't yet been able to afford a first big bike. The Passive Aggressor is doing 180 miles per week and in total has covered 16000 miles since it was manufactured in 2006. They haven't all been easy miles either, while I'm a bit lighter now, at one point I was on the wrong side of 24 stone in weight.
Those hard miles are showing, it seems. I average 35 - 40 miles an hour on the A69 on my way in to work and coming home much less than that, since I am riding directly into the prevailing wind. Time to upgrade and allow someone else to learn as I did on the bike.
I can't buy anything for cash, as I simply have none. Finance is the answer and last week, I submitted an application to finance this gorgeous bike, which sadly was declined. Seems the finance companies prefer to finance newer models, so if they need to repossess them, they stand a chance of recovering their investment. A shame, because I really liked the look of that bike.
So, another look around netted me this gorgeous creature.
A 2008 NT700 VA with 4322 miles on the clock according to the salesman on the phone. ABS, three months warranty, free delivery and practically new. A bit more expensive than I had hoped, but meh, thems the breaks.
Sent the details to my boss's finance broker, he did some shopping around and came back with an approval. Accordingly, I've put a deposit on the bike to ensure it doesn't get sold over the weekend and the bike should be on my driveway next weekend.
I know it has the whole dullville moniker, but fuck me, I'm excited. I'll be able to achieve the national speed limit. I'll be able to hide from the wind. I'll be able to carry things without wearing a backpack. I'll be able to go up the average hill without changing into second gear.
Nothing wrong with home cooking and comfortable sex! ____________________ The Old Apprentice |

Looks like a nice specimen! If it's what you want and are happy with it, don't care what anyone else thinks. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

Gonna need to bite the pillow when you show up to the local gay bar on that.
I kid, I did debate one at one point, purely for the touring side of things Enjoy it. |

The Deauville is boring, but a great commuter. I have one (but the older shape) and can't really fault it for commuting 50 miles a day. I keep looking at newer bikes to replace it but can't find anything that really ticks all the boxes apart from a newer Deauville with ABS.
The only issue I know of in the newer models is a lack of grease on the drive splines from the factory. Seeing as yours has such little mileage I'm sure there won't be a problem but it might be worth checking soon after you get it.

Yes, I'm lovin' the shaft. Stretchy, inconvenient needy bastard chains do nothing for me.
I'm super impressed with this one though, the other one I was looking at had between 25 and 40 thousand miles on them but were only £600 cheaper. Should arrive sometime this week, I can't wait. ____________________ The Old Apprentice |
