TL:DR

Bought a run around bike.

I run an insurance quote using an English sounding name which is a legal name I use. Insurance comes out at £92. Good good.

I then run the exact same quote but with my legal Chinese sounding name and lo and behold cheapest quote is £286.

Yet the rider is exactly the same except one name implies I am not white the other does.

Anybody care to explain the discrepancy?

It's insurance, they just give you random prices and hope you take it.

There's no coding in name field on any distribution site I've ever used

I do have a copy of a 1970's Fleet and Taxi underwriting guide which gives advice on which foreign sounding names to avoid

Why unless you are actually looking for racism? I have one name, I use one name. It gets me that so many from other countries have so many names (all legal apparently). I work with people and depending on where they are, are known by different names. If your name is Steve, use Steve, if it is Promise (yes a big black lad I worked with called Promise) use Promise.

There will be some connections with some names, Double barreled names in this country makes you appear posh (my older sister has one)

It does sound like someone is looking for an issue just so that hey can be offended.

What website did you get the quote from so other people can test your theory.

I've heard that airline websites are known to use cookies so when you search for the same flights again, they bump up the prices to make you think that you've got to 'BUY NOW'.

Porn history should be mostly irrelevant...

No but like airline tickets, the site knows you've visited before so it puts up prices.

Delete the cookies, the price drops again.

Also a friend of mine known as Johnny since he was about 3 finds that his insurance is usually a fair bit cheaper when he uses Jonathan rather than Johnny or John.

Yes, you could get cramp and then go for a ride where your hand has a sudden seizure! That'll put your insurance up by about £1000 Doh!

Just tried it again with my dad's car price difference is smaller.

But a change from Wong Sau to Gary results in a £55 difference on confused.com

Same company that is giving the cheapest price?

Perhaps your Chinese name is to short for the cheap English one?

My wife has always had cheaper car quotes using my surname and an englishified version of her name than if she uses her Chinese name. Her friends have similar experiences.

Did you delete cookies in between name change though? What if you then try "Gary", don't delete cookies, and then try "Steve"? If you continue to get the same quotes for English names, and higher quotes for Chinese names, then it would be interesting to see what responses these companies offer (if any). Would have to be entirely sure that the only variable changing is the name though, and not time of day/number of visits you've made to the site etc etc.

As it's using Confused I don't think it's a cookie issue, I've used confused to change minor things and never had the price change, unless name does have conditions and the fields I changed didn't.

A Halifax spokesman said customers’ details are passed to a panel of insurance firms, who provide quotes.

He added: “Under no circumstance will a surname be used as a way of influencing the decision of the panel.”

Except they can't explain why Matulevicze comes in £100 higher than Cuthbertson. Thinking

FTL is an awesome game. Easy to learn, hard to master. Still not managed to beat anything above easy difficulty!

Do you have bad credit? Your credit rating can affect insurance (or so I've been told)... Perhaps your real persona is dodgy?
