I park daily in a tiny little mews - it looks like a smoking area behind buildings. There is double yellow lines everywhere - I don't know if they can even do this because it doesn't look like a street but anyway. So lots of riders fit their bikes between the yellow lines and the walls (can you do this?). I've used it for parking twice now and the first time I did fit my bike behind the yellow likes thinking that I better do this. Today, even though I was the first motorcyclist there and had plenty of space I thought this is just stupid and it's way more efficient if I put my bike in a way that goes over the yellow line a bit but allows other bikers to also fit their bikes/scooters. So I got a £130 ticket for this. Can I contest it? I'd say at least 50% of my bike was behind the yellow lines and it wasn't obstructing anything - I don't even see why they put yellow lines there. If I parked my bike so that it fully fits behind the yellow lines, am I going to get another £130 surprise?

To be honest, if there wasn't a building camera just over my bike I'd have said that the warden had moved my bike...

One of the buildings has a camera just over the bike. I don't know if the council will go as far as requesting a video copy etc but there is a camera. I am not willing to say that "Someone moved it" and if they manage to prove that nobody did this I'll just say that I've made a mistake then Very Happy and I thought I'd parked it fully behind the yellow lines.

The yellow lines cover the entirety of the carriageway including any verges/pavements. I don't think parking behind them will make any difference.

Google maps doesn't actually go into it and from the outside you can't see much. It's tiny. And yes, I know that a yellow line covers the entirety of the carriageway but I've seen quite a few motorcycles being parked behind the yellow lines there (in a corner and along a wall) and they seemed to be OK. I parked there once behind a yellow line and was OK.

Says "City of Westminster" on it. Reason for the ticket "Parked in a restricted street during prescribed hours". I thought it should have said something about illegally parked etc. I must say though, I lived in Berkshire before and the tickets there looked much classier - better packaging too! Very Happy

A restricted street you say?

what are the restrictions?

Is it permit only?

Was there a permit on the bike that's been removed?
or is that a game best not played?

Okay, lets have the link for it anyway.

There are signs which have the parking restrictions on them?

Right, here is the big picture. Outside of the Mews is parking up to 4 hours and payment is via phone etc. Inside the Mews there is a double yellow line everywhere. Think of the mews as an appendage to the larger street. However, there is an area in the mews which is covered by the yellow line but is a bike parking bay. It doesn't say motorcycle parking anywhere in that area but people use it for parking and nobody gets a ticket. I parked on the other side because my bike is bigger and it would have taken up what would normally fit 2 bikes/scooters. I thought there's no harm to park just on the other side which is a corner and there's nothing there. Actually there are some electrical installations (big steel crates locked with a padlock) which I made sure I don't block. I could argue that in order not to bock them I had to park partially outside the double yellow lines. I must say I'm still not sure if parking close to a wall behind yellow lines is a common thing which is allowed.

Do you think that it's a good idea to publicise your willingness to attempt to pervert the course of justice?

You do realise this would be a lot easier if you just show us where it is on Google Maps? Laughing

No because that identifies me pretty narrowly. There's like 4-5 bikers that park there, and I'm the only one with a motorbike - all others drive scooters. You're basically asking me where can I find you if I choose to.

Or you could have parked elsewhere.

Your defence hinges on the specifics. If you won't give them, you won't get specific help.

Well, you were on/over/inside/above/coterminous with double yellows[*], so it sounds like you're banged to rights. Just putting the tip in still counts. Generically, appeal it anyway, say it was your first day. It's about as good a "aw, please, mister" reason as anything else.

You may want to try and get the status of that bay clarified. If it's not signed as a motorcycle parking bay, there's nothing to stop them ticketing you there except common decency.

[*] Assuming that they are correctly terminated, which we'll have to assume since we can't see them.

Why would I (or anyone else) be interested in finding you? Confused

It's pretty hard to give useful advice about your parking ticket if you won't show us where it was parked.

There are sign posts with the parking restrictions on them?

Am i being thick or not but IMHO the double yellows may be a bit of a clue as to the legality of parking in this area.

That's what I normally go for but I'd seen motorcycles there which were parked behind the double yellow lines - between the lines and the wall of the building.

Without seeing this supar-sekrit bikecave, we can't be sure, but it sounds like the ghouls were just tolerating it and you pushed your luck a bit far.

I hope it hasn't given them a taste for that area. Sad

Don't be daft, why should basic rules be followed by ordinary people in an ordinary street?

I'm sure those people who use the muse for other reasons are a bit cheesed off by people parking in the wrong places.
