Have never done anything so stupid.

Changed the oil in the VTR yesterday morning. It was still golden, but had been sat for almost 2 years. Anyway. All went well. No hidden terrors.

Warmed up, jumped on for work. Stopped around 2 miles up the road to double check the level, needed a little top up so poured in another 200ml or so from my backpack. Sorted. 20 minutes of riding later, I stopped at a traffic light. Smelt oil. Guess what.

I left the oil filler cap off. Rolling Eyes .

Oil all over the side of my bike, my boots, and yeh. The rear tyre. It was COVERED. Panicked, pushed it to the side of the road and checked the oil. Most of it was still in there. Wiped down the tyre and the bike, looked in my bag and there was my filler cap. Laughing .

Stupid, stupid, stupid. And fucking lucky not to have crashed. Most importantly, no damage to the bike. Got away with that!

edit; It wasn't a fatal error, so title changed. Cool .

I left the oil filler cap off. For me, that's a fatal error. 10/10 stupidity level. I must have been distracted by a text during the top up. Razz .

Not as bad as what my brother did. he put the sump plug in finger-tight to stop it dripping and forgot to tighten it afterwards. Plug came out going down the A2, dumped all the oil on the tyre and he came off the bike.

I've done wheel nuts up finger tight then drove off (no damage, but dodgy - felt the wheel shift when taking a bend).
Put new oil in the top of a car engine and it's gone straight on to the drive (no sump plug).

I suspect my worst mistakes are yet to come Confused

Finger tight wheel nuts and drove off : done that!

Worst thing I've done so far is put front brake calipers on finger tight and ridden to work. Noticed a knocking noise, the bolts had wiggled out but fortunately didn't fall out.
