Hi all been a while.

Just bought a new CRF250L to do a 3/6 month tour of.... well of where ever the wind takes me Smile Setting off in 3 months. Got some mods to do to the bike (larger tank, seat mod, luggage system installed, spot lights)

I've read LOADS of reviews on the bike but I haven't spoken to anyone who has owned one. Just wondering if anyone on here owns/has owned one and could give me some advice on what it is like living with it ect.

Would be grateful to talk to someone to has owned one for a while Smile

Great to be back Very Happy

Any reason you didn't stick with the XT or go for something with a larger tank to begin with, Transalp or similar?

I think a couple of forum members have one, one just posted a video of him ditching it into a puddle in general bike videos I think. Laughing

Also plenty of videos online, I found this bloke's channel the other day, he lives so close to me so it's weird seeing all the routes and roads I know in his videos!

He also does some basic mods to get slightly more power out the 250. E.g. air box, exhaust ect and videos them if that's your thing.

Thumbs Up

Seems reliable enough but mine hasn't done that many miles as a second bike.
It's a bit slow on main roads and I'm not sure I'd like to go 'touring' with it. Road handling is pretty good for a traile bike.
You'll be topping the tank up every 100 miles or so but fuel economy is good.

There are various mods to get a bit more power... don't see the point myself because it will still be slow, and trying to make it go faster misses the point of it.

My XT got stolen a few months back and to be fair it let me down too many times for me to go aboard with it. I've bought the Honda brand new so I shouldn't have any problems with it as it is simple to service.

I'm not going to do any mods to get more power out of it as this will effect the MPG. I will be installing a tank mod which will double the amount of fuel I can carry.

My only worry is that I haven't seen many with 15k+ on the clock so I don't really know how well the bike wears.

It's a great bike. I took one out for a test ride before buying one and it feels perfect for what I want.

There's a rather slow dedicated forum here - https://www.crf250l.org/
The only noted problem so far is camchain tensioners at higher miles (honda!)
It seems like isolated incidents so far.

As an avid tourer of Europe & eastern europe on motorbike I am rather perplexed on your choice of transport Shocked

Actually, I am totally stumped. Why? A 250 single for touring? Put luggage on it and the only reason for it is gone. It's not a light weight flickable fun bike, it's an underpowered small bike that will struggle. It will also be increadibly uncomfortable over long distances.

Hey, Kudos to you to go touring on it if that's what you want, but I'd rather a baby Beemer, or a Versys or something similar to do any miles in comfort and still have off road ability.

There are people taking them on round the world trips and such - just don't expect many 500 mile days.

What tank are you putting on it? Acerbis? What's your opinion on it?

Oh I totally get you can tour on anything. The C90 brigade spring to mind. I's just I like a little more comfort and a relaxing ride.

I've done Euorpe on various machinery from a Superdream to a Goldwing and know how unenjoyable it can become when you are soaked through, got a sore ass and 200miles from your next destination on a bike you have come to hate. Laughing

Each to their own.

If I was doing touring a single, let alone a small one would not appear on my list. Think unlaboured workhorse or mid range, er6/versys or SV650 if you a slight more racy position.

Still voting for a transalp to keep with the enduro looks

Smegballs can vouch for touring on a 250 single.

And although I didn`t use a single , I did a 2120 mile tour on a 250 with no issues.

Brand new CRF : cant see the problem myself, DO IIIIT!

Indeed I went for a 690 because I wanted to enjoy the off-roading, but still wanted to get there in reasonable shape.

If I was short on cash and not going for the riding experience, sure... I'd probably use a car, actually... but a small bike might be considered.

If I was primarily off road, might consider a smaller bike. But then the 690 barely weighs more than the CRF-L, but has 60hp or so.

It's not that it can't be done or enjoyed, it's just that there's a lot of other options that would likely be a lot more enjoyable.

Anyway - for a dirt bike I'd look to a more comfortable seat (I had a gel pad put in mine) and add a sheep skin pad too.

I've had a CRF250L for about a year - it's currently for sale on Ebay though.

It's a great bike, very reliable and ages between service schedules.

I'm getting rid of it only because I want something a bit lighter as I'm getting more and more into off-road - having said that I've regretted my decision a bit already, as the new bike I've got needs a bunch of work to get it working as I want :/ The CRF just worked.

The only annoying downside to the Honda for me was sourcing parts - a lot of the mods are mostly available from the US, so you pay a lot for delivery.

Replacement parts from Honda are also expensive.

The TRF forum has a good thread for the CRF - probably worth a read Smile

I went green laning with a few lads once in Cirencester. One guy had just bought a CRF 250L as a second bike and it seemed allright, FMF pipe, power commander and different air filter. Suspension handled the rough stuff better than my TTR, but my TTR left it for dead on the road, acceleration and top end. But I had done a few mods to that bike as well, 11.5:1 ish compression ratio, 2mm overbore, uncorked, airbox mods, air filter mods, a polished head, not ported though, a DG O exhaust silencer, re-jetted and different sprocket sizes.

Mine wheelied quite easily in third, I can even pull fourth sometimes. Twisted Evil That CRF wouldn't even lift off-throttle in first, but I don't suppose it was designed for that. It did definitely seem less tiring off-road though, I think the weight is better displaced and suspension was better, less rough ride.

After a 7 hour day, his arse seemed to thank him more than mine, both standard seats, well, mine had been lowered by about an inch and a half by a short previous owner, which I hated, I'm so glad I found a guy willing to swap for a standard saddle.

I'd say do it, I was going to go touring round Wales on my TTR last summer with a mate on a Mito, but we both accidentally got jobs instead, ruining the last ever summer holiday we'd have before having to be like what proper grown-ups is! Laughing We'd started getting them ready and everything, I wish we'd done it now. Rolling Eyes
