Road near me... 2 lane dual carriageway each direction one of those lanes each way is a bus lane. There is a bus three times an hour.

Even if it were 'the law', that shows rather a failing of understanding of their basic subject matter.

What I've never understood is where I live motorbikes can't use the bus lane but cyclists can which means the bus is stuck behind cyclists and has to keep moving out of the bus lane to overtake. Surely the worst two modes of transport to place together. One with poor visibility that keeps stopping and one that's slow and hard to see. Motorbikes are faster and wouldn't cause a problem.
Also taxis are allowed to use the bus lane, not just black cabs but all of them, why? How is a taxi any different to any other commercial vehicle.

The bus lanes usually have the solid white line stop then re-start at suitable points on the route. So in theory, nothing should enter/exit except through those breaks / gaps.....unless overtaking stationary vehicle, horse, road sweep etc

Also, cyclists generally like to keep their momentum up - not great when there's a massive vehicle that's hard to see around stopping in front of you regularly.

Still, find they're useful.
Reading has allowed motorcycles in it's bus lanes for many, many years.

Taxis are generally allowed on the basis that they are for people not clogging up the roads with their own cars, so get priority treatment.
Also, it would seems police vehicles not on emergencies are allowed too Rolling Eyes.

The bus lane on the Bristol ring road (that they are ruining by adding a traffic light at the end of it) has a break just before the roundabout to the M32.

It looks like normal traffic are being given the use of the lane, but within 20 yards it's a bus lane again. Presumably for buses that don't want to go left down the M32 so they don't have to cross a solid white line...

Bollocks

Most cycle lanes I've seen in the past 20 years, 10 of those years it was my only transport and I clocked up a few thousand miles per year are absolutely shit, think trying to ride a motorbike permanently filtering through two lanes of static traffic while dealing with gravel, pot holes and broken glass then everything suddenly merges into one lane for the lolz…

Highway code says cycle lanes are there for the cyclist's safe use, the highway code says they should be used if available and also that it may make the journey quicker. But as explained earlier, most are not fit for purpose due to surface or that they stop suddenly at a narrow point in the road - just where you'd want the extra protection of the separate lane.

as a keen cyclist, I'd actually back removal of cycle lanes from UK roads!

short answer, bollocks, cyclists may use lane if gives additional safety to cyclist / is practical

most cycle lanes pointless and useless - like bodyguard

I've always thought of a taxi as a less economical mode of transport, at least in Norwich where everything is centralized around a small city. Most taxis will travel in and out of the city mostly empty on one journey so doing twice the miles a normal car would.
Most delivery vehicles should be allowed to use them as well surely, better to have one truck delivering then 20 people driving to the shop.

EFA. I engaged the local council in a debate as to why they were selective about which bus lanes you could ride in. They waffled about case-by-case and progressive traffic policies, whereas I opined that not knowing if a specific lane was allowed or not meant paying extra attention to the (not abundant) bus lane signs. If you knew they were all open or all forbidden it would be much easier. Nothing changed though. I left.

Of course you can exit a cycle or bus lane. Otherwise how do you overtake or make a right turn, etc. They're not the same as the solid line in the middle of the road which have rules about crossing. There are no rules about crossing bus or cycle lane lines. Its not the crossing that's an offence, it's being in the lane when you should not be.

Dashed lines/gaps at junctions etc are to allow turning etc by other vehicles.

Well, what happens is that idiots create a job for themselves that involves ticking boxes, and then they pay other idiots to flap their faces so that the original idiots can tick those boxes.

The world becomes a better place, because a box without a tick in it is like an oyster without a pearl.

I would say that Taxi's can be lumped in with buses i.e. you're paying specifically to be taken somewhere. Also, the main point of a bus lane is to allow a free flow of traffic, so if you let all commercial vehicles use them, in some places the bus lanes would be as slow as a normal traffic lane.

Bloke I play football with went on one of these awareness courses. He learned stuff he really should have known (like what the NSL is in various contexts). So IMO they have their place. Feeding bollocks misinformation to the participants isn't it. But as Roger says, the box got ticked.

Bristol bus lanes allow bikes in all but two locations. The consistency makes life a lot easier. Would be better still if they were 24/7.

When I was doing my training in Bristol my instructors pointed out the bus lanes I couldn't use. They told me that I could enter the bus lanes at the ends and where there were dotted lines, but if I had to leave them to go around something I couldn't go back in until I got to another break in the solid line.

Must be one of those secret rules or offences, as I can't see a word about that in the Highway Code or TSRGD 2002 (diagram 1049).

That's the stupidest thing I ever heard Laughing

Like some kind of child's game. You can't cross back over the white line. It's turned into a forcefield!

There's an irritating bus lane around our way; it's usefully long and skips a big queue of traffic in the evening when I'm on my bicycle. However, it is buses, cycles, taxis and goods vehicles (!) only - no motorbikes. And the road has a solid white so you can't filter down the outside of the traffic even though there is usually nothing coming in the other direction (typical rush hour traffic flows). If they allow vans, then there is no real reason not to allow motorbikes.

That's interesting. Have the signs for that been approved by the Secretary of State for Transport? You might want to ask.

Double solid white?

I know it would be stupid to have all commercial vehicles in them so the bus lane should be for vehicles that help cut congestion, like buses, bicycles and motorbikes. Paying for a taxi isn't helping anymore then hiring a limousine or using a rental car.
