Hello,

Probably a subject that's been touched on but I'd like to imagine things change as time does.

Do prices really change from winter to summer? I've seen better average prices last summer than this winter (looking at similar bikes). How much would you estimate this to change?

Whilst scouting for used bikes I see dealers warranties vary from 1 month to 3. While in life there are no warranties... Doesn't this seem bit too short? Is there any negotiating in this?

If anyone is mechanically savvy, send me a PM or post. I could use a hand with checking a couple of bikes before I buy. I'll give beer money or pay for your time, whichever is convenient. Smile

Thanks,

But how many shiny bikes with high prices sell for that price in Winter? If you are talking cheap stuff or winter hack material then
they have generally depreciated as low as they will (or in the case of hacks are in demand). If you are talking dealer prices they never change they will remain in fantasy/mug land even if there is total economic collapse.

Any compelling reason you want to buy from a dealer? Private sale gets you better prices and warranties aren't all they are cracked up to be compared to the extra spent with a dealer.

You may want to state your location.

Awesome, what are the winning lottery numbers going to be for the first Saturday in March?

Variation in prices is likely to be higher in winter depending on which party is keener. You can only buy bikes that are for sale, or sell to buyers with cash ready to spend.

Ignore asking prices, look at eBay completed sales. And remember that even that represents only a few sales and doesn't guarantee that money actually changed hands.

Dealer asking prices don't appear to reduce by a penny, ever, regardless of season or ageing stock, and nor (IME) are they keener to sell in winter. Most of them don't seem bothered about selling at all.

If your meta-question is "should I wait for...?" then my answer is no. Pay the money you're happy to pay for a bike that you want that's available at the time that you want it.

Except if it's a Suzuki, as they'll always have a bigger sale next month.

Thanks for your comments. I had a feeling words like 'pre-season sale' were more fabricated by sales than a reality. There is no real reason I want to buy from a dealer except that there's more and easily available, and perhaps the phantom confidence that they just wouldn't sell an unreliable ride.

I don't have a problem with a private purchase if I knew the bike was in good condition, hence the request for help which by the way is in North Herts, Hitchin.

Cheers

When touting my GS for PX last year, dealers spent from 20 minutes to 20 seconds with it before looking it up in their trade price books and making exactly the same offer.

I think it's great that the 20 second check-the-mileage dealer is running a charity that offers book money for bikes based purely on their cosmetic state, and of course they certainly wouldn't list a mechanical lemon as a peach in order to avoid taking a loss on it.

Roger I can't tell if the last remark is meant to be sarcastic?

I traded my ford fiesta for a good deal and got 1.2k when other dealers only offered £600 to buy only. The gearbox was fudged and I knew it well, but they didn't pick that up... So I didn't mention it Neutral

Sardonic, perhaps.

I'm suggesting that a dealer who doesn't care enough to check a bike before making an offer on it is unlikely to care much about the condition in which they sell it, or accuracy with which they describe it.

Dealers will buy lemons from time to time. Have you ever seen one advertising a bike as such?

Got it, makes sense now. I'll keep looking for a believable story private buy or a decent deal. Most of the ones I'd go for are >130 miles away, I'd rather not...

Still looking for someone in the area, so ronery.

You'll find love more easily if you put your postcode in your profile. It's inevitabre.
