Thought I'd share this since a few people on the forum have Enfields too.

Pre-unit Enfield bullets of any vintage aren't known for their conservative oil useage. They tend to leak/burn a fair bit and require regular checking and topping up.

On a long trip, this is a bit of a pain because the oil filler is a bit too inaccessable to simply pour oil into from a bottle if you get caught short. You either need to take a bottle with a long spout or a funnel. I for one am fed up with having to carry an oily funnel about with me all the time.

The simple solution would be to extend the filler neck so you CAN pour oil from a bottle into it.

So I got my local engineering spot to make an extended filler neck up for me out of alloy. Works a treat. He added the "cooling fin" detail hiself. This isn't a big job at all for someone who can work a lathe.

https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f216/stinkwheel/CIMG2267_zpsdl2xdd5k.jpg

The bottom seals nicely against the existing o-ring. I've fitted a bonded seal (Dowty) washer under the filler cap.

The only remaining job is to fit a longer dipstick. It simply screws in and has an M5 thread so a bit of 5mm bright steel bar, a hacksaw and an M5 tap are the only tools needed to make a new one.

Here's the plans (remember I'm a vet, not an engineer and did this on libre office draw, not a CAD package so the drawings may not be perfect but the measurements are correct).

https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f216/stinkwheel/extension%20collar_zpsjolx5hxe.png

NOTE: There is more than one type of oil filler cap. This one is a screw-in type with a round dipstick. You'd need to do something different if you have a push and turn one with a flat dipstick.

Nifty idea but christ what a crappy way to finish a part. No broken corners, galled thread and face and his 'cooling fin' detail looks like the part has spun in the chuck.

Worth every one of the no pounds I paid for it then (I pop in and give his cat a wormer every 3 months, he makes me odd wee bits and pieces).

Looks worse in the top photo because I've not cleaned any of the swarf and gereral yack off it yet.

It's the best finished part of the bike. Laughing

Should/does it have a breather hole?

Not on this model perversely. They heavily screwed about with the breather system on the later models culminating in trying to make them vent the crankcase pressure out through the top of the oil tank.

Doesn't work. Which is why I eventually drilled a hole in the crankcase and fitted a breather stub and valve.

Most people will have already modded the filler cap with a pinhole breather hole drilled in from the side if they've re-instated the more traditional crankcase breathing system.

But I like my oily funnel. Folded arms

He's right, I genuinely do carry one, with most of the spout cut off.

Nice mod, but I'd have thought the last thing you would want right there is extra cooling to produce even more mayo.

If it's not a breather, there won't be any build up.

Mine is a 350.

It sits at about 60 which is both the cruising and maximum speed in most circumstances, unless there's a headwind or a steep hill in which case 50. Headwind AND steep hill and you're doing 45. Will sometimes sit at 65 on motorways.

Returns in the region of 80mpg. Mine used 600ml of oil going to the dragon and back with a free-venting breather (so say 360 miles all told). Mine seems to use a LOT of oil though compared to others.

You do not ride a bullet at half throttle if you want to go over 30mph. It makes about the same horsepower as a 125.

You'd be amazed how many cars I overtake. I'm seldom holding people up unless it's a particularly long hill.

Is yours an iron 350?

My AVL 500 does about the same top speeds, although it will indicate higher. It's all torque and might conceivably add another few (real) mph with a bigger front sprocket. It doesn't burn or spew oil (yet), although keeping the primary cover sealed is an ongoing project.

mpg is indeed 80 or more. Fuel is energy is power, and it doesn't make much.

The electric starter on the AVLs is a TRAP. It does start the engine but will almost inevitably jam the sprag clutch. At that point, your starter is constantly engaged with the engine. My (already replaced) sprag just jammed but I got lucky and it freed off when I wiggled the drive shaft back and forwards a bit, but it should be considered an emergency starter only.

The post 2008 fuel injected UCE engines are a different prospect with a lot of improvements - including to the starter and sprag. Unless you actively want a project bike, I'd suggest looking at one of them. They even have a fuel gauge instead of an ammeter. Luxury!

Yes and no. It's now alloy barrel because the iron one wasn't for shifting and eventually came off leaving the whole bottom cooling vane attached to the crankcase.

Toying with the idea of a forged, high compression piston but I'm worried that'll make the crank let go. As it is its hella reliable (if thirsty for oil).

600ml in 360 miles is 1.6l in every thousand.

With consumption like that it's not worth changing the oil. Laughing

A disturbingly high number of UK road users just drive about at a constant 40mph everywhere and under all circumstances. Usually in a Honda Jazz. You don't notice them on other bikes because you just jink past them.

Did I tell you about the time that I was behind a Nissan Micra being driven by a lady at a variable and appropriate speed for the road and conditions?

I was so amazed that I followed it for a few more miles just to be sure that I wasn't imagining it.

True story. My life, you want it.

My 350 bullet is in the same ball park as the others I guess, fuel somewhere over 80mpg, 60-70mph depending on conditions, I haven't noticed any significant oil useage as yet, its got about 7,000 kilometers showing so I guess its run in, its had the pulse air thing removed has a short sporty exhaust and electronic assisted ignition. I buy most of the consumables from india, air filters oil filters etc, very cheap off ebay, when I use the bullet instead of the car to go to work it only takes about six days to cover the cost of the road tax, with todays fuel price I guess about 4 days will be enough to cover it, although petrol has gone up 2p in the last couple of days, love to ride it, always leaves me with a smile on my face, plus the wife wont go on the back Very Happy

:D

so its the kind of bike where you go everywhere at 60ish then....

and overtakes are planned rather than a mere opening of the throttle.....

a bikers bike.

.......meaning a good riders sort of bike...as it seems any monkey can rotate their wrist clockwise..........anticlockwise however??

:karma: :karma: :karma:

they have good handleing and cornering ability as well as good enough brakes ? ......again rider dependant I suppose......

will talk to a mate as I see he has one now....he had a new ural combo ( and trailer ) about 2 years ago...... or looked like a ural minus the ak47 :D

They go round corners and the brakes bring you to a halt. The tyres are 125 width, so set your leaning expectations accordingly. The suspension is basic, even with the new fangled gas shocks on the rear. Mine has had softer springs put in the front. Sometimes after braking it doesn't rebound until I rev it, at which point the front lifts a few inches in a sea-sick inducing motion.

I'd describe it as being just barely sufficient in quality and ability to constitute a motorcycle. But that's part of the appeal. I didn't ride it today and now that the sun's come out a bit, I'm pining for it.

My mistake - despite the pictures and the text indicating otherwise my brain went into denial thinking it was the type that absolutely must breath
to release unwanted internal pressure created by the return pump.

the thread says summut about c/case breather mods............they have lost the royal oilfield monica ??

guy didn't mention auwt about oil leaks......he had panniers on his so they take a load then.......60mph and 80mpg.......and decent handling round the twisty bits......

Yup, there's loads of stuff available, either from Hitchcocks or direct from India. It's a bike that tends to be bought for tinkering.

bikenut wrote:

Yes, but they're prone to wet sumping. Hitchcocks actually do a filler extender with a breather in it:
