Heading home from work today in my van when I noticed a very brightly custom painted
shocking pink Triumph 865 Speedmaster on my right waiting to pull out of a side turning.
I couldn't really miss that it was a female rider on account of her small size, pink combats
and lid with pink graphics. Rolling Eyes
Anyhow, she was waiting to turn right as I passed the turning as if to follow me but for some reason
didn't come out right behind me despite the road being clear? I was almost around the next bend when
I looked in my mirrors and saw her make the turn too slowly and drop that big chrome
beast right in the middle of the road.

I immediately did a quick u-turn to go back and help because judging by the size of her she would
never have picked a heavy machine like that up on her own. Sure enough when I came back
round the bend she and the bike were still on the floor in the road. The cagers were swerving
round her putting two wheels up the kerb to get by rather than to stop and help. I partially blocked the road
with my van and jumped out to help her get the bike up on it's wheels again. It was clear to anyone with eyes
that there was a bike and biker down yet a Corsa still hit the mirror of my van trying to get past rather
than wait a few seconds until I had got her bike and her out of harms way.
Another heavily tattooed chap ( I suspect also a biker) stopped in his van to help too. The rest of the 15
or so cars that came through there were trying to pretend they couldn't see anything.
She was unhurt but a little shaken up and annoyed she had dropped her bike just after it had come out of the spray shop.
Fortunately there were huge chrome crash bars on it and apart from a bit of minor scuffing to the R/H mirror, twist grip
and R/H rear indicator it was undamaged and all her new paint survived ok. It turns out she hadn't warmed the bike up fully
and the choke was closed so it half stalled as she was making the turn hence the delay pulling out.
Nice young girl, she was having trouble finding neutral so I hopped aboard her (sofa) bike to assist.
How do people ride with their feet out in front like that?? It felt very odd putting my feet there,
made sure it was still rideable, checked again she was ok and went on my way.

On the off chance any of the Bristol cagers who would rather kerb their own wheels than help a (obvious) woman in trouble
may be reading this (especially the yellow Capri who seemed to be laughing as he went up the kerb to avoid stopping and Corsa that hit my van)
I hope your face meets up with your windscreen real soon Middle Finger Middle Finger . It's not about being a biker and all that guff,
it's about being a decent person, and apart from me and tattoo bloke they seemed to be in short supply today.
I'm not after a pat on the back, just had to vent as it saddened me to see just how many people develop tunnel vision when somebody may be hurt.
Didn't catch the girls name but she had what looked like a partially removed celtic cross tattoo behind her left ear, she said she only passed last October
If you are reading this, like I said, don't let it put you off. You'll laugh about this one day. Thumbs Up
/vent.

Surely thread title should be "cruisers are gay" or l2ride.

Bravo for helping though.

APPARENTLY ...
Its very easy to lift a motorcycle, even if you are a small girlie
(although this does look quite simple, I haven't actually tried it myself yet Laughing )

Yep, does seem that might be the case! Wink

Or was the rider also a car driver and you are commenting on how they go out without the skills needed to perform basic maneuvers, inconveniencing others?

An awful lot of people have an awful lot of problems every day.
A lot of these no doubt are "their own fault".
I'm not convinced that you helped 0.0001% more of the ones you could have makes you THAT much better than the people around you.

Me, I would have too, regardless of the situation. (I've helped push broken down cars off the carriageway before I could drive as an example.)
But I don't expect others to do the same. Sure, it might make us feel better to help the few obvious examples we may see infront of us, but in the grand scheme of things that we sort out.

I'm not really sure what you are saying G but the partial blocking of the road certainly seemed necessary
at the time as the passing car drivers weren't allowing much room for me (or anyone else) to help.
I had a few seconds to decide what to do and that made the most sense at the time.
I'd rather a car hit my van (which it did) than me, the woman or the
bike. It was purely to give me enough cover to take my eyes off the traffic squeezing and pushing
by to concentrate on lifting the bike in a relatively safe area. Once the bike was up and on the
pavement I quickly parked my van to one side again. I didn't ask if she drove so can't answer that one.
Like I said, I wasn't asking for a pat on the back just a bit upset that what I thought was a friendly place
compared to London where I am originally from seems to have just as many selfish people as anywhere else.
Not expecting others to do the same is a bit like giving up on society from where I am standing.
Right or wrong I try to see life from an optimistic viewpoint, I was brought up to help others whenever I could.
If that makes me an arsehole then I'm happy to be one. Thumbs Up

'Car drivers are arseholes'

Some of them sure, not all of them, beware of generalisations.
I dropped a heavily laden K100 whilst stopping just off the A30 near Redruth
a few years back and due to the all up weight and negative camber was busting a gut trying to pick it up.
A couple of cars passed by but within a few minutes two guys in a car stopped to help a big
(not in the least pretty or feminine looking) ugly fucker get it on its feet again.

They only charged me twenty quid Laughing Razz

Good on you for helping out. Thumbs Up

I don't think you can generally label folk by the type of vehicle they drive or ride though. I've had more cagers than bikers pull over to check I'm okay and see if I need help when I've been parked up at the side of the road. 99% of the time I've just stopped for a smoke though.

One time when I did need a hand after dropping my bike Embarassed there was a biker right behind me who just sat there waiting for me to get out of his way. It was a bloke who was in his garden that came over to assist me in the end.

There is a thought that you should only ride what you can pick up easily by yourself, but I have seen vids that show how big bikes can be picked up by little people, but saying that, I think it should be demonstrated that you can pick up the bike you are on. Obviously there are flaws in that argument with many exceptions, but I'm sure something can be worked out.

As for helping someone out, it all depends on the situation. Some people may not feel that they can help, others just don't see that people need help and that if they were in that situation would just get on with it.

Who are you helping right now?

I'd suggest you were brought up to help others when if you came across them.
Doing so does tend to make us feel good about ourselves too, so we'd have to question *altruism generally.

However, there's generally a lot more 'deserving' people of our help who aren't quite so obvious that we ignore on a daily basis.

*Probably the whole concept of it, but that's another thread, maybe.

You don't even have to have come off for them to be twats

I stopped to let a vehicle out that was turning right as there was a gap coming the other way.

cars just went to the left of me being half on the pavement, the look of shock on a driver's face when I started moving as he was part way past me was rather surprising (I knew he was passing but was trying to close the gap / set off again)

why might someone be stopped in the middle of their lane?

as the chap in land rover and trailer pulled out and I started moving again some muppet in a chavved up corsa passed me on the right and wrecked the trailer.

I now don't let anyone out unless lots of space and only need to slow a bit and make my intentions clear. If I need to stop to do it, no, worried about getting rear ended now.

If you are on a major road and you stop to let someone out of a minor road then unless you are in near gridlock, you deserve a car right up your jacksie, with out benefit of a how you do or lubrication.

Absolutely boils my piss seeing people search for something to give way to. Its fucking dangerous.

There had been enough time for the vehicle to get out if I only slowed which I did, didn't realise he had a trailer until I'd come to a stop thinking he was being over cautious.

Because following vehicles shouldn't be prepared to stop?
