Hi guys

The time has come to renew my insurance and I have put down that I have no security, the reason for this is I got sick of using my big chain when out and about last year so started using a small oxford, this made me think if the bike did get nicked then my insurance company could ask why I wasn't using my almax.

So my bikes insured for £2000 as its in VGC and my excess is £200 so I wont be using a chain anymore when out and about or at work just a disc lock.

At home I'll still use all the security I have but don't see why I should use anything if I pay for insurance.

did it make any difference to the insurance cost?

I put down an approved disklock because the option was there, but then realised I was stuck having to use it ALL the time, as it's now a get out of jail free card for the insurance company

What bike is it.

I tend to not bother declaring any security regardless.

With the disk lock... it was stolen with the bike when they evidently used a van... Wink

I agree, don't declare it unless it makes a significant difference.

In the right direction, that is. Recall that I had a lowest quote go up by 1/3rd when listing an Almax and squire. Rolling Eyes

I ran two quotes on my old 125, one with a chain, disk lock and ground anchor and one without, the latter premium came out 8p more expensive.

Assuming it stays constant, £100 worth of security would take 1250 years to pay for itself Razz

Probably some clause that says if you ever take out insurance with no attempt at security that's an excuse not to pay out straight off the bat. </cynic>

Tl;dr - use security to hinder opportunists and to help avoid coming back to a bike that isn't there, but don't declare it

It made no difference to the price but its a GPZ so not really the most desirable bike out there Laughing I'm only using a disc lock to put off the odd scrote from pushing it away.

I wanted to know if it was the "£2000" bike that was in your avatar Laughing Best of luck claiming £2k back from insurers. Just bag a chain, any chain is better than none to an opportunistic tealeaf.

I don't lock my bike for the insurance company

I lock it cos I love it and don't want to lose it, no amount of insurance payout could replace it

Laughing I keep monthly pics off my bike plus I can get a written witness statement of my machanic of its condition and what he thinks its worth, plus if I'm insuring it for 2k then surly they should pay me for what I insure it for as long as I can show why its worth that. Anyway we're not talking a lot of cash and I use my car a lot more nowadays since I started my new job. My point is I'm sick of chaining up my (low value) bike when I pay for insurance.

I sick of worrying about my insurance, for what use they are anyway, wifes car gets hit outside our house, I get the guys name and car reg, I report it to the police who say its not there job (one dude to busy shagging men when on duty and married) and what use have they been, all they want to to is get the car fixed at our cost then try and find the dude, useless. No doubt they'll try and say she made a claim next time she renews her insurance. Rant over Evil or Very Mad Laughing

I like my bike but I'm not attached to any vehicle, I look after my car but don't get attached, they're a tool end off and it I happen to return to where I parked it and its gone then I'll report it and get a taxi/bus/train home. Lifes to short Cool

Firstly why?
Secondly, what makes you think that an insurance assessor will give the slightest toss what your mechanic thinks of it?

I'm not experienced in making a claim so I'm just doing what I think is best and have been advised by other bike owners I know who have made claims.

What would you suggest the best way of proving a bikes value?

Assuming it's a GPZ..

Not unless you have an agreed value policy, which you probably don't, since they only tend to be offered for classic cars/bikes. Most normal insurance policies are done on a market value basis, which essentially means the amount it would cost you to replace it like for like.

A combination of Parker's guide and checking completed eBay and Autotrader listings. £2k for a GPZ500 is optimistic as hell, to put it politely.

Its good to keep as they may offer a bit more if you can prove its in good condition if anything does happen.
The letter from your mechanic wont give much weight.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter how much you think its worth they will only pay out market value, otherwise we'd all be insuring our bikes for about £20k which mysteriously get nicked in the first month of the policy.

About 1200 tops. They're very common bikes, which pushes the replacement cost down significantly.

£1300 on ebay, book probably under that for insurers. That is the absolute last year of the GPZ also...

Your insurers will pay market value at the time of the crash, they will wriggle.

Put into perspective, 2004 Daytona 600 and 2003 CBR600RR, both dwarf your bike and were both bought and sold for under your 2k figure.

You probably did pay over the top, but you bought a 500 twin which was the real downfall here. Wink

My insurer paid out £1200 for my TS50X, I paid £200 for it originally.

You can't second guess what they'll offer you. I dont think £2,000 is beyond the realms of possibility, but it isn't a value I'd want to rely on or assume I was getting .

So its anyone guess then Laughing

this is the closest to mine but with double the miles and a year older
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kawasaki-GPZ-500-S-EX-500-E10-/261654948586?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item3cebd9aaea

I've not see a bike the same year and miles as mine for sale on ebay since I bought it, plus its a good "first bike" anyway the point is I'm not planning on it getting nicked but if it does then we'll all find out what I get for it, either way I'm not carrying a chain around with me anymore.
