Preload Adjuster Stuck Honda XL125V

Hiya,
Ever since buying my baby Vara 7 months ago it has always bugged me that the preload adjuster (the collar type adjusted with a c spanner) has always been rusted over and stuck. Thanks to a long weekend I finally got around to removing the monoshock from the bike. After removing all (or as much as I could) of the rust and gunk in and around the adjuster I left it to soak overnight in light oil.
However I tried again to move the adjuster but for the life of me cannot get it to budge. When I fix the end of the shock in a vice and give it a good old push with the c spanner I can feel the whole shock rotating with the end still stuck in the vice which can't be good. Any suggestions to free it up?

If you can beg or borrow a spring compression tool, it makes it a lot easier to free-off the pre-tensioner.

It's a common problem on those, because of the road muck thrown about by the back wheel.

I have fitted a hugger to mine, which helps a lot but I am thinking of fitting some sort of gaiter over it, if I can find something to fit.
