Being a lazy student with two months of freedom over the winter break, I decided to fill my time by programming a game.

It's a classic point-and-click adventure type, so is quite basic, 2D graphics etc. It uses my travel photos from China as a backdrop for the story.

I used some software called Adventure Game Studio which has a few handy presets, so some of you may notice the mouse buttons look like they're from Space Quest, and that's because they probably are. Aside from the preset stuff, the character actions, dialogue, cut-scene animations etc were all done with C++ style coding which was a fun new thing for me to try out.

Chongo's China Adventure. (Link now changed to DropBox download - Cheers ScaredyCat!)

It'll take a while to get to the end of it. Hopefully you don't get bored and stop halfway through because I'm boyishly proud of the final boss level. If no-one gets that far I think I'll turn that part into a standalone game.

I won't be heartbroken if no-one likes it as it did only take two weeks to make.

Either way, enjoy Thumbs Up

Which OS, or is it cross platform?

I'll happily stuff it in my dropbox for people to grab from if you want..

*edit Dropbox Link.

Also Windows might run under wine, not tried as yet.

I think it's just for Windows, although I honestly don't know for sure.

That would be fantastic if you were to do that! The current download link expires in 30 days I think so it's not really a big emergency, although a drop-box place might be far easier - and faster - to download from.

Downloading a random game from China is always a good idea, you will win many free viruses by completing the game. Thumbs Up

@ Ste @ Cansa

QQMail is the Gmail of China. It's massive.

I expected some BCF-style criticism to creep in if/when people tried the game, so you have both exceeded my expectations by even managing to pick faults in the download link Laughing

Nobody should download programs or games where anything appears dodgy. If you don't download such things then you never going to worry about what the communists are using your computer for.

Where did you learn to code?

No ... this isn't sarcasm Laughing
I've been interested in learning to code and it would be interesting to know how you got started.

I did a C++ module in my first year at uni last year.

The software I used to make the game is actually quite easy to get to grips with and only scratches the surface of what real programming is. It has loads of preset functions so you can just dump them into each room and alter them as necessary.

For example, I click a button on the visual editor (the bit that shows me, visually, the actual level I'm working on) that says 'Walks off left edge', then it takes me to the script for the room, where there's already a pre-written thing that looks a bit like this:

function Walks_off_left_edge()
{

}

And then I just fill in whatever I want inside the curly brackets, e.g.

function Walks_off_left_edge()
{
player.ChangeRoom(4, 56, 34);
}

where 4 = room number, and the other two values are X and Y co-ordinates on the screen.

It's fully diverse and you can actually make your own functions and program pretty much whatever you want, but to get started, like I did, it's fairly simple.

I actually recommend the software I used to make the game - Adventure Game Studio (it's free) - to get started with coding. It's fun, creative and let's you see how things work. It also has a little tutorial and an active forum of users offering help for beginners.

I think I know more about C++ from this now compared to when I was doing the boring, endless-code-on-a-screen, Large-hadron-collider related stuff at uni.

was exactly would you like to do?

learning to "code" covers a huge range of things. The basic concepts apply across most of it, but the implementation differs from language to language.

what you want to do kind of dictates which language you should use, for example if you want to build website there no point learning c++, similarly you wouldn't learn javascript if you want to build a project on an adurino or similar.

I have always found it easier to learn if I know what I want to achive because I can look at similar example and see how they work and change them suit , rather than just working through "hello world" examples on the web and thinking that's nice now what do I do with that.

have a look here for some basics tutorials.

I dunno theres a lot to be said for finding a tutorial that will get you up to a point (in something vaguely similar to what you are interested in) then allowing you to try things out and look up bits when you get stuck.

this also factors in the "I wont do it like that next time" method of learning, which i find to be very effective

Thanks for the advice & sorry for the thread hijack.
I appreciate that learning to code is pointless without context, i just want to learn the basic for fun. Might come in handy, maybe not Laughing

Well it works on Linux/WINE, providing you run winsetup.exe first and set it to run in a window, otherwise the keyboard isn't recognised.

Brings back memories of the little games I used to write on a 1k ZX81.
I was never really into gaming as such, and never actually bought any games for the ZX81. I thought my efforts were pretty crap. However having seen the 'professional' efforts in later years I think they were probably good enough to have marketed and made me rich. Bugger Sad

Updated version is now up, with some slight alterations. Game has an opening menu, the player character is changed a bit, a few bugs are fixed, there's a map in the inventory for tracking progress, and the dialogue font is now larger and more readable.
