Passed my test last year, but only just got my 1st bike. Is it usual to be nervous on the road had to ride it back home which took just over an hour. I've been driving for 26 years and found it really nerve racking. i'm hoping its just going to pass with more time on the road.

Yep.

It's a confidence thing. The more you ride, the more confident you will become the less nervous.

Or you die. Laughing

I remember being scared of my r125 when I first got it. Fear lasted about a week or so until I started to get comfortable.

Actually come to think of it I'd already been riding honda innovas for a few months before I got my r125 and was never scared of those so I think it was the gears that intimidated me at first.

I reckon it's always good to be alert and defensive so if that part doesn't fade when the nervousness does then that's a good thing.

Anyway, all normal man up otherwise you'll get pregnant etc.

You're propelling yourself at up to mumble miles per hour with nothing between you and the lampost of fate but a millimetre of cow rind or plastic.

If that doesn't make you nervous, then you're an idiot.

Don't worry, once you've been riding for a bit, you'll become an idiot just like the rest of us.

I'm an idiot.

Can't get my head around people who are nervous when riding.
I felt nothing but excitement from my very first wobble on my Get On session.
My CBT was in weather I don't even contemplate riding in today but it was on of the best days out I've had.
If I had any serious reservations about riding, I wouldn't be.
That's not to say I'm blasé about safety though.

I was in the same position when I passed my test (well I'd been driving for just over 20 years anyway). First few times out on my own bike were terrifying and exhilarating at the same time.

Yep it's all down to practice and experience. It's quite a thing being on the roads with a whole bunch of morons you already know are morons in big killing machines, except now you're not in one yourself. And after 20 odd years you know how your car will react to road conditions but no idea about the bike just yet.

How long it takes before you get more confident depends on the strength of your self preservation!

Funnily enough I remember my first driving lesson, coming up to a really sharp corner thinking, if I was on my bike I'd be cranking it over to get round that...what the fook do you do in a car...?? Laughing

As others have stated, its just your instincts trying to keep you alive.

I say cling onto the fear, the less fearful you are the more at risk you are IMO.
It's how you manage the fear that matters.

When you say test what exactly do you mean?

How did you feel during the lessons?

Striples make the best first bikes Smile

I found the first few hundred miles to be a bit nervous in places mainly down to the added fear of owning something worth more than £1500 and the tyres. Bike came with Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa's and I did not get on with them!

They had a coating on the tyre which made them ridiculously slippery in the wet, I'm talking 2 wheel slides at 10mph. That took a couple of hundred miles to clear. To be fair it was October and November, so not overly grippy anyway, but these were terrible.
I never went fast enough to get them hot, only realised this when I found out more of what they were capable of while spanking the bike round Wales in the summer. Tyres were amazing.

What tyres do you have on?

HobGoblin, with your 15 posts in 8 months I think it is safe to assume that you haven't spent much time here.
Marking stuff like that as "Confusing" is not a good thing to do.

If you find that confusing, then you might struggle to use your hands and feet at the same time.

Go buy a scooter.

Hobgoblin, that's not how this works, that's not how any of this works.

CaNsA says "Stop being nervous or you will die"
Pinky says "Ride more, be less nervous, or you will die"

You can't disagree with me and then agree with Pinky...

Dude, you're an idiot.

Give him a break man, he marked one of my posts as helpful, he clearly hasn't been on here much. Laughing

Hobgoblin, grow thicker skin, you will be better off here for it, or for that matter, any forum not run by Nazis. (...yet) Smile

No matter, judging by recent events the Mods will be along soon enough to revoke all of the opinion based karma votes, and maybe some "Informative" too, just for lulz.

It doesn't matter if you "Agree" with this post, or any other post, if the Mods don't want you to agree with it. Laughing
