Bought a new oil filter for the ZZR and fitted it today.

The one that was on was an HF303 that was bought from Wemoto so was confident was correct for the bike.

THe one I bought today was from a bike dealer who assured me it was the correct fit (he'd written HF303 on the box for his stock as hadn't got any actual hi-flow ones in) but the body of the can is slightly shorter than the one that came off.

It appears to still be a good fit and it's only a slight difference in length but wondering if this is actually and issue or if I'm being paranoid and should just get to the pub already...

How much difference. A small amount will be fine as long as the seal faces are the same.

I wonder if it's a HF204 (or other generic equivalent). HF204 is slightly shorter than HF303, and is very common for Honda bikes, while HF303 is more common spec for Kawasaki bikes. I have a bunch of both; 204 fits my VFR and SH, while 303 fits my GF's ER6.

https://www.oilfilter-crossreference.com/convert/HIFLO/HF204 suggests they can be substituted. Other scanning online suggests that some bikes have switched from one to the other between model years, perhaps depending on clearance from downpipes. I'm guessing there's not a big difference in technical stats between the two.

If it's longer you have slightly greater filtering area inside if anything?
If shorter slightly less, it would have to be reduced a fair bit to be a serious issue I'd think.

I run a shorter nasp oil filter on my Rover 220 turbo, it's for ground clearance issues. It doesn't and wont effect anything though, how could it?

Honda changed the spec of the spin on oil filters for my Varadero at some point in my ownership. They suddenly became shorter, that included the genuine Honda supply and the Halfords copies (which are probably made in the same place).

If they're happy to do that it can't be much of a difference.

I don't think it matters so long as the fitting is the same. Many years ago Landrover (I think, could have been London Taxis) literally halved the size of the Diesel engine oil filter.
