I am form the UK with a full UK car driving license and I am 26. I've had the license since I was 17.

I am moving to NZ in a few weeks and plan to take my bike test whilst over there. I was wondering if, when I return, I would be able to convert it to a UK bike license, or would I need to re-take the test?

I've had a look on the GOV website (https://www.gov.uk/exchange-foreign-driving-licence), although I am not certain as I have a UK car license and will have a NZ bike license.

Any clarification would be great Very Happy

Tests. Many, many tests.

At a glance, you have to go via learner license then a restricted license (no riding between 10pm and 5am on either!) then wait at least a year before getting your full license. And that's the 'fast track' with extra tests in it. Practically you're looking at 18 months to two years to get fully licensed.

Thanks for the info.

When I get a full license in NZ, would it be easy to convert back to a UK one when I return?

Excellent, thanks!

Would I have to obtain my full license, or would I be able to convert a restricted license to the equivilent in the UK?

It would have to be a full licence afaik.

Bikes are expensive in NZ though, and not that common compared to UK, despite the close-ish (relatively speaking) proximity of Japan, and the abundance of NZ-from-new Japanese cars and jap imports, there really doesn't seem to be many bikes.

Converting to an NZ driving licence from UK is much more straightforward, took me 8 minutes in a local AA office, and they even back-dated the bike licence too because you can only have one licence date on it, which was my car licence.

How long are you in NZ for? How experienced are you at riding, i.e. are you good enough to take your test with only a few lessons, or starting from scratch? Might be worth trying to get it done before leaving UK if you want to ride out there.

You can ride on UK licence for 1 year after entry into NZ. Longer than 1 year and you need to convert it. Although that takes 10 minutes, can be done at a number of places in each town and there aren't any real queues. Only costs £30ish as well, and you keep your UK licence.

I will be in NZ for a year or two. It won't be a problem to get a full licence in 2 years, but I won't be able to do it in 1. I think you need to be riding on a restricted licence for a year?

My experience isn't much in all fairness. I'm in Nepal now, where I've learned to rode a manual bike from a Nepali friend. I've rented several bikes for days each, and will have in total maybe 7 days of solid riding. Although my riding is not up to test level, I will have picked up bad habits, I can ride in downtown Thamel, which is crazy with loads of cars and bikes everywhere, little road laws or consideration for others. There are also no pavements so pedestrians walking in the road, which I can handle fine. I doubt I'll have to dodge pedestrians on any national test though!
