Hi all,

Will be ordering some new rubber for the hornet soon - has anyone used 'Tyre leader'?

When searching for my size there are 2 options called Pilot road 3's, the only difference being the more expensive one has a 'DOT 2011' mark.

https://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o520/bikerrtomm/tyre1_zpshp8cw3en.jpg

I take I ignore this one and just buy the cheaper ones?

What's interesting is that for a set of PR3's costs £165.78

PR4's cost £180.

£15 Quid difference. I would get the PR4's but have heard they have a harder compound to last longer, I think I'd prefer them slightly softer - not really sure. Laughing Laughing

Any ideas - and how's tyre leaders delivery?

Can't grumble at those prices though. Thumbs Up

German. I've had tyres delivered from East Germany in 48 hours. Tracked step-by-step all the way until they hit Blighty.

So are they selling the older tyres for more money?

Or are the ones which dont advertise their manufacture date even older?

This is what I'm wondering. I don't want a 5 year old pair of tyres really.

Check OPONEO as well. They claim all their tyres are under 2 years old.

Tyres are date-stamped with the week and year of manufacture in a little oval area on the side wall.

Most. Not all.

My current bike and car tyres have this stamp.

The car tyres I've just bought to replace them do not, despite being newer. And I know they're newer because they're a tyre that was only released since I'd bought the previous set.

I was considering buying some new bike tyres from Tyre Leader though, seem to have the best prices for what I'm after.

Who? OPENEO? They seem 'to good to be true' cheap. Front tyre for my Fazer is about forty quid less that I'm getting quoted from my local fitters.

Slight thread hijack. Can I trust a car tyre fitting shop to fit a motorcycle tyre or would their machinery bugger up the rim? I was thinking of just taking the wheel down to one, not the whole bike.

Not sure really.

Why can't you take the wheel down to a bike shop?

Most places charge £10-15 for a tyre change on a loose wheel, which is about what most car places would charge anyway.

I've used OPENEO twice now, they're good, quick delivery and deal with issues well too.

Just ordered a pair of PR3s from them for £164. Bargain Thumbs Up

I've had no problems with Oponeo, all the tyres I've ordered are <6 months old. Fit them myself for extra cheapness.

Matt, when they arrive can you do me a favour and tell me how old the tyres are?

Because If they are ok I will do the exact same thing. Laughing

Cheers. Thumbs Up

I'd check with your local mechanic if he's prepared to fit tyres he hasn't supplied. Some will, some won't 'because of the insurance'.

No problem. Thumbs Up

They do state that nothing they sell is over 2 years old, and that they store to manufacturers specifications.

I did read a test a while ago where they took some tyres that had been stored for a long time (7 years maybe?) and rode them back to back with the same tyres that were new. No difference in handling at all. Still, when tyres are costing near £200 a pair I don't want something that has been sitting around for years.

I may be mistaken but weren't the PR3's released in January 2011?
Could be tricky finding anything older than a 4 year old PR3 in that case.
My Penny Coin Penny Coin - These are supposed to be a touring tyre, as such I'd expect some mileage out of them but they wear out much quicker than the PR2's. They do perform rather well but if it's a road race tyre you want why not use the Power Pilots?

It's taken me ages to decide on PR3's and then you say that. Laughing

Looking at them, they are probably the ones I want to go for. D'OH!

Cheers mate.

Just as an update though, I had a quote from a garage near me who wanted £310 for PR3's fitted to the bike. Or £260 fitted to loose wheels.

Then I rang up another independent bloke and he said it would be £233 all fitted and balanced.
He also sounded keen to get my restriction off, and sort my MOT. Winner, should be able to get everything sorted in one hit.

Will have to get a seperate quote now for Pilot Power 3's. Laughing

Cheers. Thumbs Up

I've not tried the 2's or 3's but the originals were a nice tyre, wore out far too quickly for my lump/pocket and the PR's are possibly better for wet roads.

Last set of tyres I bought new were BT023's and they were £208 fitted to loose wheels. They had just come out at the time too. I don't know where you guys all get these quotes from but they seem v expensive.

I've had quotes from pretty much every motorcycle place within 30 miles from me.. Laughing

All are very expensive, (over £300...) £233 seems fair enough to me.

Most places want £15 + VAT for a loose wheel fitting.

Wouldn't say the quotes are expensive. Place down the road from me quoted £242 for PR3s fitted to loose wheels, another £269.

OPONEO and places like it are the cheapest because they are shifting tyres in bulk. If you don't mind taking your wheels to the bike shop for tyre fitting you can get a bargain.

Tyres just turned up from OPONEO.

DOT codes are 1813 so that's about April 2013 and 1014 so March 2014. Under 2 years old just like they say and I am more than happy with that.

All good really. Paid with PayPal, delivered by DPD who have that live tracking thing going on and if you give them a mobile number they txt updates.
