I've recently taken up lock picking and thought I'd give my Datatool Devil 1000 a go, to my disappointment I opened it in seconds with just a screw driver... You can probably figure out how by the photo below, it's a widely known vulnerability of this lock design.

I bought three of these based on recommendations here on BCF and elsewhere, they're available for less than £20.

It's possible that all three of my locks are counterfeit, even so, that also means the market is flooded with crap Datatool Devil 1000s.

Just thought I'd let BCF know...

And the clue is where??????????????

My lock and chain cost £180 about 20 odd years ago and still costs about that for the modern version. Although I have had bikes stolen, I have had them all back with the lock and chain in place. Just the damage the prats caused moving the bike.

I'd expected more to be honest, I have locks of similar value that were trivial to pick but at least didn't fall victim to a mere screwdriver.

EDIT: To put my original post in to context, I bought this lock because many have described it in a more positive light, it mislead me in to a false sense of security. My intention is to prevent others from making the same mistake.

You can make any padlock more secure, by hiding the make and model - to stop people googleing for the vulnerability.

A padlock and chain is most effective against the casual thief - someone who wouldn't normally nick a bike, but just found an unattended insecure one.

Likewise, someone who wants to steal a bike, and has a choice between padlocked and non-padlocked bikes.

If someone wants to steal a particular bike, no padlock will make a difference.

I don't get padlocks... if you're out and about where do you put the thing? If you want it to be any decent it has to be massive or otherwise what's the point?

There's a video floating around somewhere of a guy breaking all makes and models of lock/chain under 10 seconds.

The Datatool Devil 1000 is a disc lock, even at the time of buying I wasn't under any illusions that it will last more than a few seconds between the jaws a bolt cropper.

I used the lock to deter the more casual thief, e.g. one that has no lock picking skills and doesn't carry any real tools.

This lock is vulnerable to even small improvised pry tools, it's only about as useful as a visual deterrent. Thus, even thieves who carry house keys can easily defeat this lock.

Here's a video that explains the exploit really well;

You have to remember that they are a deterrent to the casual thief, not fool proof. You do pay for what you get on a lot of the stuff and a £20 lock in my view is £20 wasted, no matter what you say. Expecting more from such a cheap lock is just daft. Getting more is a bonus, but expecting it........... well!!!!!

Security Theatre, innit. I just use a massive shackle lock which I hope will intimidate criminals by its sheer size - I hear they're a cowardly, superstitious lot, I should put a bat sticker on it.

On the bright side, https://www.datatool.co.uk doesn't list the Devil any more and sellers show it as out of stock.

Lock picking is something I always fancied learning, but I couldn't get the hang of it with a bent hairpin or something like that. I think I've just played too many Elder Scrolls games...

For £20 I would expect it to be better than the one in the video just posted. I was expecting him to at least need a hammer to pop the end bit off

The basics arent hard, once you get the nack its alreet.

A basic set of decent picks isnt dear if you want to give it a go.

Security by obscurity does not work. The best thing you can do for a vulnerability is make sure that the users and the vendors know about it as well as the bad guys rather than just the bad guys knowing about it.

Remember the bicycle D locks that could be opened with a bic lid? They were about when I was in my teens. I carefully tested the entire product line when I worked in a bicycle shop, much to my dismay.

But then when I got ill and had to move house and left my bicycle in leeds, I came back 6 months later to collect it, having lost my keys in the move. Needless to say it took us longer to get the quick release wheels off so we could put the bike in the car than it did to remove the lock.
