Kind of you to tax his car for him... Must be a new scam Laughing

A DD will take a few days to be set up.
So yes contact DVLA and explain the situation.
I would also contact your bank and get the mandate cancelled and invoke the DD guarantee to get the money back, if it debits.

If you had paid via debit card then that is a different matter.

Might even be tempted to let the police know. Could be this is a new scam selling on written off cars and getting cash for them.
Did you get a great deal on the price. Embarassed

So a Romanian offered to knock half the price off a car for the sake of his cat, and you didn't walk away immediately Shocked

I'd consider giving power of attorney to a responsible adult.

Nah, that's bollocks. We've all been up against it. I had a large vets bill a few years ago, my Jack Russell puppy decided to teach a hedgehog who's boss and got spikes in his mouth. Cost me £500, had to sell my Exup as was skint at the time, let it go cheap as needed to pay the bill.

You might be right on your feelings towards a cat but this was a Romanian...

Spoke to DVLA, all I need do is cancel direct debit, simple as that. No penalty, no fuss. Brilliant.

So they did it for you then while you spoke to them?

Given that THEY send these details to your bank....... But I would still check and make sure they have in a few days....

I just wonder how long the DD option will stay. I can see many people setting it up, cancelling after 1st month, or before and hoping they do not hit a ANPR and if they do try arguing it must be a bank error that it was cancelled Rolling Eyes

Surely all that would happen is they would still get fined for no tax and if say the error was with the bank you try and recupe the money from the bank.

No, I still have to cancel the DD my end.

I know the score with the DD cancellation. A work colleague tried something similar, cancelled the DD after 1 payment. He parked on McDonalds and enjoying a meal when he saw a DVLA clamping van pull up opposite his vehicle, they were out scanning number-plates. He rushed over, they were having none of it and clamped him.

He had to pay £100 release fee AND get tax before the clamp came off. Serves him right. They can clamp on hotels/McD's/on the steeet (obviously), not on your drive though.

A DVLA clamp is the only one you cant legally remove yourself,
I didn't know they couldn't clamp you on your own drive though.

If your on your own drive then the car is off the road and does not need to be taxed.

VED is chargeable on vehicles used or kept on a public road. So, yes, not required on your own land.

That's as distinct from third party insurance which is required if a vehicle is used on a road or other public place.

That should cover moving your vehicle on your own land to which the public enjoy a general right of access (and the postie and your neighbours are the public). Due to a recent Strasbourg decision it's now clearer: insurance policies are going to have to be extended to cover use anywhere, even private land.

Where that will leave us with continuous insurance and SORN remains to be seen.

While I would do the belt and braces and make sure it was cancelled.... The DVLA should be doing it at their end and making sure its never set up
