Is there anywhere that I can ride a bike larger than a 125 without having a bike licence to see if buying a sports bike is for me?

I drive a company car most of the time, but I have a Impreza WRX as a toy, but it spends most of its time sitting in my garage because it's an expensive toy and I'm starting to think a bike might be just as fun but cheaper.

My issue is that I rode a moped a long time ago when I was at college and I came to the conclusion that it was a death trap, granted it was a very old rev and go Honda melody and not a nice big sports bike, but at every opportunity it slid out from underneath me.

An example is, if I rode over one of those tiny little dropped curbs, the type most people have outside their house driveway and I didn't hit it straight on, if I hit it at an angle, the bike just ended up sliding, kind of like someone had just kicked both wheels from under me.
This happened a good few times on grids or little curbs or in the winter on a patch of ice and I really can't afford to pay for a direct access, a bike, gear, tax and insurance only to find out that a bike isn't for me.

I'd really appreciate any help or advice.
Thanks in advance.

Jay

Well, you'll need to find someone with a bike who's willing to trust you with it.

Training school is the obvious choice.

The "Get On" scheme is aimed at new riders on peds and 125s...

https://www.geton.co.uk/free-motorbike-scooter-experience/

... but there's no particular reason why you can't have a go on a bigger bike. You'll need to ask around the local training schools though.

Failing that, you can do a CBT course, or at least the road ride part of it, on a bigger bike. Again, it's unusual, but you don't ask, you don't get.

Last resort, you may have to do a CBT course first on a 125 and then blag or pay for a go on a big bike.

You're unlikely to find a training school with sports bikes, but any 600cc+ 'A' bike is going to give you a reasonable impression of whether you're OK with the weight and into the revvy stuff.

Buy a big bike, speak to your insurer and tell them you are going to be using it for lessons.... they should insure it for you (because that's what I done)

It's all very well finding someone who'll let you have a go on a sports bike, it's whether they'll let you ride up drop curbs at funny angles.

So you have a massive amount of money sat doing nothing, in a garage..... Rolling Eyes

Sell it. Spend £1 of it learning to ride a bike. Worse case you have lost 1K, but at least you have a new experience under your belt and a garage ready to take a new challenge Karma

I have an Audi S4 which I use as my only car. And I have a sports (ish) bike. If I could have only one of them, the car would win for practicality etc. but if I had another car to use, I would choose the bike every time Smile . I use mine to go to work meetings, trips away as well as weekend wanders (mostly looking for good cake).

To be honest it took me a while to go faster on the bike than I do in the car, and there aren't too many overtakes on our A roads that the bike can do where the car can't.

Sounds like the moped has knocked your confidence - my older sister had one too and then refused to move up to a proper bike. Although I've never ridden a moped, I bet a real bike is a completely different thing and you really can't compare them.

I bet you'd love it, and those Get On sessions are a really good start. And even a sportsbike uses a whole lot less fuel than a WRX!

(I regularly ride up a dropped curb to get down our back lane with no issues at all too).

I can't find on on the website but I seem to remember when I did this many years ago that you did not need a licence.

Best to phone them and ask to be sure. Think you just need to know how to ride a geared motorcycle.

I've many many years ago ridden a Honda Melody, and a very fetching sight it was too, never been so scared on two wheels in my life.

You could do a 4 or 5 day DAS course inc your CBT, you'd have to do your theory too, but you can do the theory for 18quid off your own back. You'll get your CBT and may end up with your full licence after a week, just ask the school if the cost includes all clothing and kit. :up they'll supply the bikes.
