What would cause a 12v battery to put out 15v? I bought the battery new, filled it with electrolyte left it overnight and in the morning it was 15v, I trickled charged it with an optimate and still 15v, the electrolyte level is correct. What would cause this?

I have done, both my shitty £5 meter and my dads expensive Fluke one say the same.

It has been months and it is still doing it Laughing

It's not to much of an issue, the bike it is in doesn't charge the battery I just use an optimate (the same optimate that looks after 2 other batteries that are 12v (and actually are 12v).

On a normal digital meter display the '5' and the '2' are pretty much mirror images of each other. Here is a '5' followed by a '2'

To that end, have you checked your eyes are both in the right way round and pointing the same direction?

If it's actually putting out 15v, the optimate shouldn't even try and charge it - it should immediately see it as (beyond) fully charged.

If it was a 7 cell rather than 6 cell lead acid battery I'd expect it to be putting out around 15v, but that seems unlikely.

If it was a lithium battery, also possible - but filling it with battery acid probably would have changed that!

What happens under load? Say with a bulb running off it.

Odd that
was wondering if a broken or cracked plate may have that effect?

as far as I understand, having 15 V is not possible. the voltage of each cell for a lead acid battery is normally 2.1-2.3 V. small variations are due to how the battery is made, but the voltage range is determined by the electromotive force which is given by the chemical reaction between the lead plates and the acid. having a broken plate would not increase the voltage.

15/6=2.5 V per cell. that's how they are charged (the chemical reaction is forced in the opposite direction).

If it is showing 12 volts of load I would be a tad worried, put it on charge for a few hours and meter it again.
