My 2001 CG starts fine and runs fine for about 5-10 minutes. Then it starts to shudder and jump. It gets worse and worse until the engine just cuts out. If you leave it for a while it will start up again but performance will still be bad. If I start it the next day it will be ok for 5-10 minutes again.

I´ve cleaned the carb but it hasn´t helped.

Please help, I can´t stand commuting on the tube anymore!

are you sure you have cleaned the carb enough?

try running it with fuel cap off, it mightn't be getting any air to it.....

You 're turning the choke off aren't you? My CG will run for about 3 minutes on the choke before getting upset.

Choke up = on.
Own = of.

Had a friend who got these mixed up and thought his bike was buggered.

I´ve actually cleaned it twice, it wasn´t that dirty to start with. The Choke is down (off), it gets a lot worse with it on.

Valve clearances tight? Tight enough to hold valves open once hot and metal things expand? Something electrical breaking down when hot? I'd start with the valves as its a no cost job
Hope that may be of some help
Cheers!

Got to be Choke related problem - if you're talking cold start up to normal running temperature.

Have a look again at Choke settings - that's where it is.

A cold engine will run like a hot engine exactly the same - the only difference is fuel mixture and that's where Choke comes in to play.

First thing is a new spark plug, plugs are cheap.

Have you at least looked at the plug colour? It could just be idling rich and sooting up.

Also when you say you've cleaned the carb, what exactly do you mean?

Have you fitted a filter into the fuel line? I do it as a matter of course now.

Hi Guys

-Changed the spark plug when this all started, it looks normal (no massive soot deposits or anything like that)
-When I cleaned the carb I took it apart completely and cleaned it with carb cleaner. I check the jets carefully they looked good.
- Checked the fuel flow today and took the cap off after driving it for a bit. Doesnt seem to be any flow issues and the fuel looks clear.
-Choke is fine, when I was cleaning the carb I kept forgetting which way was on and off so I´ve had plenty of opportunities to spot any problems with it.
-A mechanic checked the valve clearances not too long ago, he said the looked fine.

One other symptom I forgot to mention was that it occasionally backfires, normally when I am trying to start the engine mid-drive after it has cut out. Any ideas?

DANGER, WILL ROBINSON.

Then that's exactly where I'd start. It's very easy on the CG125.

What's your idle screw set to? As in, if you screw it in then back it out, how many turns? 2 full turns out is the usual starting point.

is this a mechanic you trust? a mechanic I trust told me another guy showed him a sheet with all the valve clearances for his bike, measured by another mechanic. the small problem was the sheet listed 5 valves when the bike had 4.
