I seem to remember reading a thread about this a while ago but can't find it so this could be a repeat thread.

My new bike didn't come with the usual mini tool kit under the seat so I'm having to put one together. A few questions:

What tools do you carry for everyday riding or commuting?
What tools do you consider as essentials and which are good to have providing you have the space?
Are multitools like Leathermans better alternatives to tool bags full of many different tools?
Can you recommend any decent ready-prepared tool kits for bikes?

I just carry one of those bicycle multi Allen key things that has all sizes plus a Philips head. It's there in case anything rattles loose, I can't imagine doing any serious work roadside.

All I have under my seat is bungees, a can of tyre weld and a self heating coffee. My bike didn't come with a toolkit and I've never given it one. If it isn't a puncture that my can of tyre weld will fix I'd probably ring for help or swear and kick the thing and leave it and walk away. If my bikes reliability was that questionable I wouldn't put myself into a long/far journey in the first place.

I wouldn't call them tools but I usually have a small can of chain lube just in case I need to go and do long distances out of the blue, a towel to wipe down the seat if it rains and some Clinell wipes/tissues to clean the visor or give the bike a quick clean if it gets covered in mud/salt. All of this can fit under the seat (just!) on the Fazer as it did with the Divvy. I used to have a bag of cable ties but I have a feeling I left those in the Divvy underseat when I traded it.

Oh, and the number for roadside assistance in my wallet, of course. Wink

I'm planning this year to keep under the pillion seat the following items:
- spare Reg/rec
- enough tools to get the reg/rec replaced at the road side Twisted Evil
- tyre puncture repair kit

Everything else is bullet proof Cool

Puncture repair kit
LED mini torch
Leatherman (for the pliers)

All for puncture repair in the dark of night (yes it's happened)

Otherwise, a charged mobile, (switched off to preserve battery) and a cash card.

A small flat head screwdriver, pliers, allen key set, adjustable spanner, zip ties & a 'promise I'm restricted officer' certificate.

Never actually needed to use them on my own bike but, they have helped some friends out while on rides.

Got my tool kit that came with the bike, a Stop and Go plug kit, in my top box I have a mini compressor which attaches to a 12v socket I have and a decent set of hex keys as the ones in the tool kit are potato.

Be prepared indeed. I'd love to try fitting even a quarter of that into a bike with underseat exhuast(s). Very Happy

Something to tighten the mirrors on my scooter if I happen to have a spill. Practically, that means 8mm and 10mm spanners. Toolkit includes deep socket to get spark plug out, which is important as you'd need to remove more of the fairing if it was a simple long tube socket. Also includes C-spanner for suspension adjustment.

VFR: enough hex keys to undo the fairing and sufficient spanners to adjust chain tension (which is an eccentric hub rotation jobbie). Chunk of fairing needs removal to get at fuses, but that's the extent of what I'd try to fix at the roadside, apart from blown bulbs.

Thinking about investing in a Leatherman but not sure which one would be best and more importantly not sure about the legality surrounding the blade.

I take my wallet and a phone. That's it.
The wallet contains an AA card and money for a coffee if I'm fortunate enough to break down near a shop.
I've even removed the 'tool kit' supplied with my 1198. I could see no realistic circumstance when I'd need a crappy box spanner made from toffee.

The only tool I carry is an AA card Rolling Eyes Thumbs Up. Unfortunately, this is largely down to the fact that my bike's underseat storage is ridiculously absent. If I need to access anything that involves a tool kit, you're either going to need to go into an AA van, or it needs to be sorted at home in my workshop. I keep a cycle multitool which has an assortment of allen keys to pop the fairings off and get to the fuse box.

On my old fireblade, I had a 1/4" drive with 8mm, 10mm and 13mm bits, and a couple of adjustable spanners and allen keys. Cable ties and WD40 all stuck in my old pencil case! Didn't have to worry about what I couldn't fit under the seat!

I know, I have issues Smile

To be honest, this is when I'm going somewhere for a day or longer.
All in the top box, with room for my lid when I get to wherever.

In terms of daily commute tools, allen keys under seat (along with hand pump and sticky string puncture kit). Bungees, insulation tape, cable ties.
I have used the pump, puncture repair, bungees and rope.

Oh, nearly forgot:

Well, I was in the Scouts.....and not just because i liked to be interfered with.
