Hey there might be a stupid question but what is ABS on motorcycle and how does it make things better, how does it work and how can it be good for a new rider? Is it worth paying extra 100 to get your bike with ABS?

ABS stands for anti-lock braking system. The rest of the questions can be answered by the thread found here, pretty much:

The general consensus is yes, it is worth having. Soon it'll be mandatory for all bikes so there won't be a choice anyway.

Over 125cc.

Peds and 125s will need either ABS or linked brakes.

OP is looking at 125s, very few have ABS.

I'm a miser so wouldn't, however I'd suggest you do £100 for something that might stop you going arse over tit.

There's a sensor which detects the movement of the front wheel.

If you apply the brake, and the sensor detects the front wheel has stopped moving suddely (locked up) while you're still going forwards, a piston thing takes the pressure of the brake so the wheel can still roll.

Basically it means the wheels keep turning in a sudden situation where you think you're gonna crash and grab a huge, adrenaline-fuelled fistful of front brake. Instead of the wheel locking you up and A) sending you over the handlebars, or B) skidding and bringing you to the floor immediately, the wheel remains turning and comes to a stop much more efficiently, while you stay on the bike.

It's not really supposed to be better for new riders. It's supposed to be for any rider in any situation where they accidentally give it a bit too much front brake and the wheel looks up.

ABS is of course also possible on the rear brake, but it's far less important in my opinion.

Main point however is that it's not just a riding aid for newbies. It's a safety feature for all bikers.

You should ideally be able to do the emergency stop in the MOD1 test (or any emergency really) without the ABS kicking in. Then you'll know how to stop in a controlled way, rather than just taking a fistful of brake and hoping for the best.

Eh. It's actually called a 'controlled' stop in the test blurb, so that's a fair point. However, don't fail your test on a point of principle by under-braking, just haul on and get it done.

Fair point I guess.

I suppose the main thing is to not become reliant on ABS just because it's there to 'make things easier'. I think that's what a few of the anti-ABS arguments were based on.
