Hi guys, mega excited just bought my first big bike! (thundercat) picking it up on Friday.

My question is, how do I tax it prior to picking it up? I have informed my insurance so I should receive an amended certificate tomorrow. Do I need the V5 slip to do online? (which I don't have yet so.....) Sad

Yep, you need the V5.

Easiest way is to do it online or by phone when you collect the bike. Use the 12 digit reference on the new keeper slip on the V5.

I did mine on the phone in the seller's livingroom. Was pretty straightforward Thumbs Up

Ask the seller to email you the number off the slip?
Unless he thinks you're a proper crook?

I have to be honest, when I picked up my bike I rode it home without tax and just did it that night. The guy I bought it from didn't cancel it until the following day so I wasn't pulled over or anything, but doing it online was easy enough

takes at least a day for the v5 to arrive at the dvla so can get away with the tax till you get home

And I'd argue (your worships) that no offence is committed.

VED is cancelled on change of keeper, it doesn't magically happen when money and keys change hands. As long as the DVLA continues to run an antiquated postal change of keeper system that takes days to effect the change (if they bother to do it at all) then the consequences of that are on them, not us.
