uTorrent Quietly Installs Cryptocurrency Miner
Many users of the popular BitTorrent client uTorrent are complaining about it silently installing a cryptocurrency miner with a recent update. The Epic Scale tool, which slows down host computers, is reportedly being installed without consent and for some is particularly hard to remove.

uTorrent forums are offline, they got fucking slammed.

I prefer Transmission. qBittorrent isn't to bad though.
If I decide to find decent torrent RRS feeds I may use it again Smile

I thought we'd hit peak irony when the MPAA stole all Kim Dotcom's cars, but bittorrenters crying foul about unauthorised sharing of their resources tops it.

I just upgraded to the latest build and there was no warning of EpicScale, but there was no trace of the software having been installed either. A lot of the latest posts to the forum are saying it's not been installed, so maybe they've thought twice and removed it after all the bad press.

I installed the build that was available last night in a VM, "Installl Skype Brah"

El Reg has an article on it.

I've had ponder about your post, and what I read on El Reg.

In the past, I have installed the same software on 2 PCs.
1 with SBSD immunisation hosts file, and 1 without.

Bloat, mal and spy ware were not installed on the PC with the hosts file, but were installed on the other.

This makes me think that the installer gets to a point where it tries to connect to a "crapware" server.
If a connection is made then it offers you all these amazing offers that you can't live with out and will give you extra Ram to download.

The same thing maybe going on with uTorrent.
But seeing as you get offered Skype while installing, regardless of the data in the hosts file, then there must be a list of "crapware" servers it tries to connect to.

If it is unable to connect to the EpicScale crapware server then it moves onto the next such as Skype crapware.

I assume this problem only affects/affected new builds going by what's written, so old builds are fine. I think I only upgraded from 2.2.1 or whatever it was so i could use uTorrent Remote app on Android. Currently on 3.3.1 never had any problems, except the ads that are in program bother me, that's about it.

Are there any issues or drawbacks with transmission, from your point of view?

No RSS Feed.
Also doesn't have a lot of other features bigger torrent clients have, but that's good if you want light weight and simple to use.
