ok so i just had my 2014 honda msx 125 stolen from me on the sunday just gone. the insurer is asking me for my valid cbt but i havent renewed it since last year as i havent been riding the bike as i had to have an operation on my throttle hand. Sad does this mean my insurance is invalid? could i not do my cbt again within the next few weeks and send that off to them, would they accept that? as my bike was stolen away from my home address it is in their interest to assume i rode it there but i had it taken there in the back of a land rover. i really need all advice asap as time is ticking away and i need to get this sorted as the bike is financed so im still going to be paying for it. i have been told that maybe i shouldnt need a cbt to claim for it being stolen as i wasnt riding the bike, but i do need all advice possible. i also have a £600 premium to pay aswell which is a killer as if i dont get a pay out i still have to pay £191 to cancel and pay off the rest of the insurance, and then still pay off the £2500 i have left to pay on the bike. i havent even had this bike a year and i dont want to be left out of pocket without a bike. please help me guys im so distressed. Crying or Very sad

thanks, George.

Bollocks, you've declared you had a valid CBT on your insurance application when you did not have one, you rode your bike somewhere and it got nicked. Now you're screwed.

Tough lesson in life.

Yep, if it was done in 2014 it's still valid.

Were you supposed to? Perhaps answering another question will provide the clarity sought here:

On what date did you obtain your CBT certificate?

Be very careful on what you say. I dare say you declared the bike as being kept at your home address so do not say you have been storing/keeping it at the other address for an extended period of time.

Maybe it was dropped over there that day as a friend was to change the brake pads the following day??? Wink

Op, you're the reason why my insurance is so high. Can't believe you think it's okay to do insurance fraud. Thumbs Down

Nothing to do with overtaking on the pavement then?

OK, let's keep it down to a rolling simmer of suspicion. It's not an unusual story.

Right, chap, get your contract of insurance and read it end to end.

Then ignore everything said here until a fellow called 'arry' posts.

Answer his questions fully and in detail. Do exactly what he says, to the letter, using the wording that he provides. Thank him kindly for his time.

I agree there are any number of valid reasons for a bike not to be at the usual address. I've lent my bikes out, as have G and Paddy that I know of.

A new user, most likely named George Morriss, born in 1995 (again, just a guess), admitting to *potential* insurance fraud on a public forum on the internet.

thankyou all for such quick replies as i am in a right pickle!! ok. it ran out in roughly september last year but i havent rode the bike since then as i have recently had a operation on my right scaphoid bone. i did have a valid cbt on the date of issuing my insurance so i would not class this as fraud. the bike was at this different address for only 1 day so not months or weeks, it was just my luck that somebody saw it and decided to steal it on this one particular day.

rogerborg:

what exactly am i looking for in my contract?

im asking if there is a way i can make my claim valid as i have a really bad feeling that the insurer will screw me out of this as i dont have a valid cbt anymore even though the bike was not being ridden. if i was to do my cbt again in the coming weeks would this still count or would they just laugh at me, as i dont want to have to waste money and it not work for me. like i said i didnt ride it there, so why would i need my cbt to claim for theft?

i also have a scar on my hip along with alot of numb skin as i had to have a bone graft from my hip bone to fill in my scaphoid Crying or Very sad

Thinking

CBT expired in September, so was the "recent" operation on or before that?

Is the CBT not issued in paper form? That should tell you exactly when you took it and, therefore, not be too tricky to work out exactly when it expired - if an insurer asks then they're not going to want to hear 'roughly in September'.

No pics of wrist or hip scars, this makes BCF sad Crying or Very sad

the operation was on november the 14th yet i didnt go back to work until about 3 weeks ago. so i was off work for a good 3 months. im hoping that the fact ive had an operation will back up the fact that i havent rode it so why should i need a cbt to claim on the insurance im paying for. coz even if it was stolen from my house they'd probably still ask for a cbt but its not like i have been riding the bike. i have been very confused with all of this and i hope im not going to lose my insurance claim. Sad

i'm no expert - but i think you need to check the small print to find out IF a valid CBT is a condition of your cover.

Of course with hindsight - telling them that your CBT had lapsed because of an injury - but you still needed F&T cover might have cleared things up.

i expect it would be a condition on a Third Party only policy - but as you appear to have Fire and Theft as well, only your insurers will know (and they will always wriggle like hell to get out of settling something)

There's no point trying to cloud the issue with doing a CBT now, as it will still show that there wasn't one in force AT THE TIME.

Good luck...

How about explaining this to your insurance company?

I.e. that you had a valid CBT at the time of taking out the insurance, an operation prevented you from re-taking it (during the insurance cover period) and since then have not been riding the otherwise legal and insured bike.

They can either take pity or not, but best to ask them.

Am i missing something here

Your CBT ran out in September 2014
You had an op on your wrist November 2014
Someone moved the bike from your address to a different location on 08/03/2015 for one day and was stolen?

I would assume if you pushed it somewhere or someone adequately covered moved it say for repairs you would be ok. (say taking it to a garage for repairs etc..) As others have said though it fully depends on what your actual policy states. If it goes down the line of "Policy holder must have appropriate test certificate (CBT) in place during term of insurance" you're screwed.

That said if you were given a driving ban in other circumstances you would still be able to insure a vehicle in case it gets nicked even if its SORN.

Did a mate borrow it? if so prove the third party cover of the friend and hey presto all sorted Thumbs Up

Clauses to do with licenses or entitlement to ride.

Clauses to do with where the bike is stored.

If you tell us who you're insured with (broker and underwriter) we might be able to find the contract online.

I wouldn't make any statement to them until arry has had his say. He works in the industry and speaks the lingo.

Personally I'd be more concerned with it being taken from somewhere other than your home address. I hope you haven't said anything to them about it being stored there long term.

Why would you tow a bike to a different location for one day? are we really expected to believe that shit story?

Check your insurance document, but i can see it having a clause to show you needing a valid cbt for your insurance to be valid.
