So, first I had the '09 Street Triple R, now I've moved to a '13 GSXR 1000. Don't get me wrong it's an amazing bit of kit and stupidly fast. But that's part of the issue.

If you want to have fun with it, even in first gear, you're doing very close to three figures in Tesco car park. Granted that's fun, it's also very much instant-ban-if-caught territory. The power kicks in and gets responsive at about 8k, which is nearly 60mph. That's where the fun starts, so even on the motorway you have about three/four seconds of acceleration before you're double the limit.

I'm not a massive fan of the riding position. I'm not the smallest guy, and I essentially can't ride it without leaning on the tank, which I think is keeping weight off the seat and leading to more wheelspin. It also feels like the throttle is constantly chasing itself when not in the high-power area.

I'm glad I tried the gixxer, but now I know it's not for me. So I'm looking into a naked again, my budget is whatever I get at trade in for the gixxer which seems to be in the £7,200 area. I could maybe swing a few quid to bring it to £7,500 but nothing more than that.

Here is my list so far along with some concerns, would appreciate any input from owners/riders of these bikes, or anyone who has faced a similar choice.

Aprilia Tuono Factory-
https://i.imgur.com/G28yIOF.jpg
My main concern with the (v twin) Tuono is parts availability/cost now that the bikes are getting on a bike. They'll be 10 years old next year, although I did find a normal one on an '11 plate. They're also coming in at 5-6 grand, so I feel like with the budget I have, spending more will net me a better bike for the extra?

Ducati Streetfighter 1098-
https://i.imgur.com/8opXPc3.jpg
Seen a few raised concerns about this, expanding tanks (seems to be down to US fuel), corrosion under the frame coating and splitting radiators. Absolutely to-die-for looks and sound from this thing though, especially with an open clutch cover. Difficult to find in my price range, but there is once down south that is within budget.

Triumph Street Triple R ABS-
https://i.imgur.com/tANYkNA.jpg
Loved mine when I had it, no concerns at all, other than it maybe feeling a bit underpowered after the gixxer. Although mine would wheelie in first and second so it's probably quick enough. Plus I can get a brand new one within budget.

Ducati Monster M1100-
https://i.imgur.com/xjTSoSi.jpg
Bit of a swing on this one. Really like the looks, but they don't seem very powerful and the riding position is quite leant forward although some new bars would sort that. Oil leaks and cold start problems can creep up though along with a headlight connector problem.

Honda CB1000R-
https://i.imgur.com/zpVFrko.jpg
Values seem all over the place on these. From £4200 for a '10 plate, to £7,995 for an '11. Very reliabile the reports would show, and some like this one can look awesome. A lot of people prefered the Street Triple though, as they found the CB to be a bit of a dull ride.

MV Augusta Brutale 800-
https://i.imgur.com/oRY1tLb.jpg
Again, a new one is within reach, and a few people have said they prefer this to the Street Triple R. Engine seems like it will poke just above the Street Triple and the throttle issues seem to be sorted. Triple exhaust looks great and some of the aftermarket triple-cans are amazing. I would be worried about future value with these, as they're being heavily discounted all over the place already.

MV Augusta Brutale 1078RR-
https://i.imgur.com/e76ziND.jpg
Found two within budget, but have heard of various reliability issues, along with notoriously bad low speed fuelling. Which is an issue as some of my commuting is slow city stuff.

KTM Superduke 990-
https://i.imgur.com/Hvh7yG3.jpg
This one is the wild card. Very strange values, £4k for a 2010 up to £8k for a 2008. Past sales dictate I should be able to find a pre-09 R model which is the best, but they're thin on the ground. I do love the colours these come in, and would like to spend a bit of time modding one.

So any owner experiences welcome, or anyone elses take on what would be good to go for. Having a hard time with this decision. I've only looked on Autotrader and eBay, so if you know of any dealers local selling models that may fit what I'm after, fire some links in, would be much appreciated!

I've ridden a Tuono and a KTM SD 990.

Out of both, the Tuono was the feisty fucker and the KTM was the hooligan mobile...

However, both broke down. 1st one at a BCF BBQ, went to a big single Laughing and the KTM just turned off going round a corner, digi dash fogged up etc.

For reliability, avoid the MV, the Honda will be reliable but dat performance Sad

Could try the Ducati SF, I never have, I've ridden a Monster M750, older one which was really nice actually!

Probably no help, but also take a look at the Kawa Z800.

The Z800 just looks a bit bland to me, and from what I've read the Z1000 would be better. I'd consider one but I've yet to see one that is nice to look at.

Just found a 1290 Superduke R for 7 grand, but I'm positive it's nicked or is a scam or something, as it's about 4 grand under value - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201503041426224/sort/pricedesc/usedbikes/make/ktm/model/superduke/page/1/postcode/g25al/radius/1500?logcode=p. If it was legit, it'd buy it in a heartbeat.

But no, 5k gets you a stupidly tidy 990, I'd seriously suggest trying one first.

Just reverse searched the image and found this - https://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=pl&u=https://pierwszy-wlasciciel.pl/index.php%3Fpage%3Dadv%26adv_id%3D2066&prev=search

He says "7700km and crashed B". So I reckon it's a Cat B write off from that, and that's why it's so cheap. Shame he omitted that on autotrader!

I did just find a 990 R for £5,500 but it's a bit high on the miles - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201410067987296/sort/pricedesc/usedbikes/make/ktm/model/superduke/postcode/g25al/radius/1500/page/2?logcode=p

Very nice and well priced. Shame it's sold... Reckon I'd rather wait for an R, it's got a better engine and seems to be more moddable at home. There's a Superduke 990 for sale up here, but it's an 11 plate with 11k miles and they're after £7,199 for it!

Did you look into the MT-07? Brand new roughly £5,500.

Not very sporty and I've got a bigger budget, so would rather something that gets the most out of it. I don't mind the MT-09 but lackluster suspension isn't acceptable at this price point for me, when there are other bikes with great kit on them.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that's at Ride On?

[UPDATE] Yes it is. I have no idea how they shift bikes at those prices. "Peace of mind?" Rolling Eyes

Another dealer explained to me that they do it so that you can wiggle on trade in and talk them down, as they do sometimes offer big trade in values, but in the case of the gixxer theirs was the lowest I've had. The GSXR 600s they have are mental money as well. '06 with a good few miles and they want 6 grand. It's less than 8 grand for a brand new one!

Yup, I got offered over book for my GS. But not enough over to make up for their asking prices!

Albigularis wrote:

They may be shy of Suzukis. When I was in asking about MT-07s last year (feckers claimed they had a pre-reg that turned out to be a "web site error" Rolling Eyes) they were bawwwing about having bought in a nearly new GSX1250FA just before Suzuki lopped a grand off the price.

I did feel a bit sad for them, until I noticed that they still had it stickered at more than the new price. Laughing

See above. Chancers.

Anyway, you're wanting a naked bike with low down grunt so you won't lose your license?

I'd consider one but everyone says "They're a different tool for different jobs" (compared to the street triple) then proceeds to not mention the actual differences between them... So I've no basis for comparison, and most video reviews are saying they're feeling a bit 'old' now. Ever rode one?

The S1000R would be my ideal pick but the cheapest used one I can find is £9,000... That's almost two grand over budget.

GSR750, I dunno, reviews have all sided on badly-made, bland ride and the value of them drops extremely fast.

I've ridden the KTM 990 SuperDuke R, my advice is find a twin-seat model rather than the single seat model as the twin seat is utter wank.

What's your logic for finding a pre-90 model, as far as I was aware the pre-09s have the tiny fuel tank with <100 mile range, dodgier brakes, crap dashboard and run a fuel map that makes the bike jerky at low speeds.

Also, how about a lovely BMW R1200r?

i've got a zrx1000 and love it. Good riding position, plenty of torque for when you want it too. It is quite heavy (220kg) so you have to throw it around a bit but it's fun. For that budget you could pick up a completely mint one or 3. Mine cost £2k Smile

Mate of mine dropped over £14K on a brand spankers SF a few years ago and hated the bloody thing.

He had all sorts of carbon goodies (including the open clutch cover) and a set of Termis, but it sounded like a bag of spanners at tickover and not much better when you got going, until the pipes took over.

I took it out for a blast and didn't get on with it at all, very odd riding position, unexpectedly poor on low down grunt and generally uninspiring, especially for the price tag.

Then there was the overall build quality, which we all thought was absolutely dreadful at any price.

He was not so secretly delighted when some blind cow knocked him off it and wrote the old shed off, he even reckoned it was worth the broken collarbone, just to be shot of the thing.

It's one of the few really modern bikes I've ridden and if they are all like that, I'll be sticking with my old stuff, ta muchly Confused

The reasoning was mainly the engine. The 2008-2011 (thought it was '09) Superduke 990 R has a different engine to the non-R. The engine is up a lump of torque and horsepower through the range. I believe that was the single seat version. People call it the 'full fat' Superduke R, as there were some versions that didn't have the uprated engine, but still had the orange frame and single seat.

The R1200R is a bike I discount purely on looks, and the ones available at 7 grand are 2012 and earlier which just look boring... I like something with a little bit of an edge.

Looking for something newer really, not a fan of most older bikes, especially if parts will be a concern. I'd like to utilise my full budget as well.

The sound is part of the attraction of the Streetfighter, I think with termis and an open clutch cover the thing just sounds incredible. But even the well-kept models I've seen two of, both had corrosion on the engine block and bubbling under the frame coating. It's hard to find one for £7k, it'd be near enough impossible to find a pristine one for similar money...

I used to do some strongman competitions, but I'm only 5'5", and have kept eating as if I was competing since I stopped. So I'm largely muscular but somewhat fat as well which makes the situation twice as bad. To put that in perspective I'm about 94kg just now with a 27" quad. Handlebars that are nice and wide like the Street Triple or Multistrada (damn that thing is comfy) suit me better than clip ons as well, I need to reach inwards a lot to reach the clip ons. I never felt the seat to be comfy or uncomfy on the gixxer, but as I now realise it's because I can't get much weight on it, most of it is taken by my legs against the tank, and some over the top of it...

Is the 848 street fighter in budget? Always seemed to be the more sorted model.

I must admit though, if I hadn't have stumbled upon my Triumph, I'd have gone with a 08-11 SuperDuke all day long Thumbs Up

KTM SMTs are also worth a look if you want to pretend to be sensible Wink

The sound is part of the attraction of the Streetfighter, I think with termis and an open clutch cover the thing just sounds incredible.

Seriously?

If you want to replicate the sound, just go and buy an old 1100 Zephyr, disconnect a plug cap, open up the valve clearances and loosen the CCT.

With the built in primary chain rattle, you should be happy as a pig in shit (and it's probably made better) Thumbs Up
