I have emailed you in the past regarding the title of this email. I am emailing again because my problem is insufficiently resolved. As you will be aware, many of the terraced properties in Waltham Forest do not provide enough space to store motorcycles (chained to a ground anchor on private property - as stipulated in your previous email), my home being one of them. As London remains one of the leading areas in the UK for motorcycle theft, there should be some compromise for those of us needing some form of public security!

I understand that vehicles and security devices placed in areas that cause obstructions to pedestrians are not viable but I would like to direct to other boroughs in London that have found ways around this:

This is a residential area in Chelsea that has installed discrete, well marked bays for motorcyclists. They do charge residents for parking permits to use them, which I feel is reasonable and would be happy to pay for such a service. Could this not be developed in Waltham Forest?

Similarly, Camden have employed these discrete ground anchors to aid motorcyclists. Could I install one of these in the road outside my house? It would not impede pedestrians or other road users and is the only real deterrent for motorcycle theft!

Another example of individual ground anchors that we have space for at the end of our road, which is soon to become a 'no through road' road.

I do feel that the development of secure motorcycle parking bays/ policies are an important consideration for a burgeoning city such as London and would go such a long way to reducing the £100 million plus annual loss that motorcycle theft elicits. That being said, if you are sincerely unable to assist me in this matter, could you provide with further information as to who or how I can petition/ appeal to have my issue resolved.

Thank you for your time.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for you recent email. We as a council are under no obligation to provide any form of security for your chosen form of transport. Through TFL we provide a reasonably priced and well organised public transport network, and our policy is to direct residents to use this.

Petition all you like and good luck with that.

Yours sincerely

Waltham Forest Council.

It'd be good if they had them all over the country.

However, I can't see many councils spending cash on this, as it only affects a relatively small amount of people. That's if they even consider motorcyclists as people. Thinking

10/10 for trying though.

There's an election next year, now would be a good time to approach the current MP and other candidates for your area.

You want to appeal the decision? Go on then. You want to make an online petition? Go on then. I wouldn't expect either to get you anywhere but there we go.

How many other people are there with motorbikes on your road? How many bike thefts have there been from your road in the past 12/24/36 months?

I assume what you've posted is just the first draft?

I like the paris picture, many solid objects, nobody arsed to use them.

Your argument destroyed in a photo. Perhaps find pictures of rows of UK bikes all chained to solid objects.

Doncaster area has much in the way of motorcycle parking with convenient posts and U bars for anchorage that are used with some regularity. bicycle parking is preferred though as in better places an less likely to get rammed by an inattentive cager on the phone.

In front of the council offices also popular as the cctv is actually watched in case anyone dare protest their displeasure at our local government, and the national government imposed committee doing the bits people get really upset about when the inevitable fuckups happen...

I have been in touch with Waltham Borough Council, and I reckon they are up for a constructive discussion, so I would encourage as many resident bike owners, or borough users, to email and petition. Keep it constructive tho and we may get somewhere.

The email address is copied to the reply I got today, in the copy of the email I recieved. Let your friends know....

In response to your Email below

I have spoken to colleagues in our Traffic Section who introduce parking facilities and schemes in the borough and they advise that we do not have dedicated motorcycle parking in Waltham Forest has there has historically been little or no interest in this area. However they would consider looking at this if they were to be contacted which can be via Traffic.Scheme@walthamforest.gov.uk

I have contacted both Islington and Westminster Councils who have confirmed that they do provide secure motorcycle parking but in chargeable dedicated bays but not in residential bays.

Regards

My original email

I have been advised that I should contact yourself, regarding the provision of motorcycle security in Waltham Forest parking bays.

I would very much like to open a sensible dialogue about providing security as seen in other other boroughs, such as Westminster, Hackney, Islington, and Kensington & Chelsea. To be transparent, I would like one provided outside my home.

Security provision such as ground anchors need not be obtrusive, and need not impede the use of space by cars when vacant. Sensible provision of increased security would also encourage people back onto motorbikes and reduce congestion.

I look forward to hearing from you

Regards

Jon

Tell them Tower Hamlets provide free motorcycle parking, some with rails to lock the bikes to. I can think of three locations off the top of my head if you want to screen shot from GSV, Poplar High Street, Back Church Lane and Derbyshire Street.

They even do it in Edinburgh in places. Just a standard bit of railing (which they will already have as street furniture). Also helps stop cars parking there because they can't open the door at the kerb side.

That said, simply putting a sign up on a pole reading "Solo M/C only" gives you something to chain a bike to.

Luxury! Glasgow bays typically have sod all and they have said they've got no interest in providing anything. So I ignore their bays and park on private property just so that I can lock on to a railing. Good job, Cooncil.

1% of the traffic miles, we're more than 1% per capita.

Not that I'm disagreeing with substance of your argument.

You'd need a councillor involved for that level of request.

Waterloo Street has the additional rail to chain your bike to too. I park there, but don't bother with a chain, as it's conventient for work. Maybe the bays at George Sq have them too?
