A huge drug smuggling operation into Britain would have provided two cannabis joints for every man, woman and child in the UK, it has been revealed.

Two men involved in bringing drugs worth up to £84million from Holland, cleverly concealed in shipments of ceramic tiles and laminate flooring, have been jailed.

It is estimated that almost 30 tonnes of the Class B drug was illegally shipped in, which is thought to be the largest conspiracy to be prosecuted in the country.

When prepared for street deals the drugs, estimated to weigh up to 30 tonnes, would have sold for a staggering £84million.

John Wright, 66, was sentenced to nine years in prison, while Steven McDonald, 32, was sent to jail for eight years.

Judge Richard Foster said current sentencing guidelines were of little help as the volume of drugs involved was 140 times greater than the most serious category for which guidance is given.
