Hmmm. There are motorcycle clubs that are just groups of people going on ride outs. Those usually require a yearly fee etc although it's not much, I've been told about £10 or so most times I've asked.

There are SoA style clubs out there but uh, yeah, one of the guys I spoke to who was still in one alluded to some pretty unsavoury stuff... and that's all I have to say about that.

I've gone on a few rides with the local MCC in the past.

Then they started introducing "membership levels" and banging on about their "founding principles", which appear to be secret.

Now all they seem to do is chaaaaridy events and building a clubhouse so they can drink shandies and talk about levels, like some Dungeons and Dragons coven.

Very silly, just ride your bike.

Aye. My idea of a good MC is one that goes on a good ride out, ends up at a pub, drinks heavily while swapping stories, shares taxis home and then gingerly meet up again the next morning to ride their bikes home exchanging sheepish looks while doing so. Not worrying about gold/silver/dog poo levels of membership.

I think the thread title was supposed to be "Time It Got Raised" but OP had a word salad moment.

My bad, I was referring to the MC members with the leather waistcoats and ape hangers.

My closest friend was wrapped up in an MCC. He's a few years older than me and I came to bikes late so I missed the fun. Harmless fun for young locals into rat bikes and little two smokes. It is quite disturbing how many tales of riders he has (that i can verify) finding out the hard way that hedges often have wire fences inside them. Or of his friends trying to cut a car in half. He did the latter twice and somehow survived.

I have two acquaintances that were provably involved with an MC. One is a violent alcoholic with no friends because alcohol and bikes don't mix, and he appears to be the only one of his peer group smart enough to pick one. The other left his chapter when it became about supporting the club's finances through non motorcycle related buisness, which is about as much as he was telling even when plied with much alcohol and the prospect of avoiding the inevitable extra duties on the morning following a monumental piss-up.

There are local MCCs that appear to meet at real ale pubs when the weather is nice. I have seen their stickers on Dullsvilles, and been blanked in j&s by the leather tassles icon that left his clubs card wedged between the seats on my bike, telling me that particular group is superannuated leather daddies.

Your experience of such things may vary, but I have seen very little that I like about such things. I have had enough experiences of intense friendship and stupidity from the days before I had a pink photo card. This history apparently makes me the kind of person an MC would appeal to, but my instinct for self preservation appears to win here.

Perhaps I'll go for a ride out or two with the folks at my local independent this year. Maybe it'll settle for being the guy in filthy textiles sat cleaning my visor or unknotting my hair when someone in a fashion jacket, sons of anarchy T-shirt, and immaculate hair spots me and suddenly develops the kind of nervous tick that suggests he is regretting playing dress up today.

What I found amusing is that the concept in America at least is of being 1% outlaw motorcycle clubs, refusing to conform, and yet they have the same organisational systems for members and same way of showing colours (i.e. leather cuts with rockers/logo on back) seemingly across the board so ironically they are still conforming to something. Wikipedia even has a page about it.

Reminds me of Fight Club, where a group of people decide to become non-conformists by instead conforming to the rules set by a deranged insomniac... come to think of it I wonder if Chuck had biker gangs in mind when he was writing it.

From what I've read being in an MC is like a second job.
You are either that sort of bloke or you aren't.
I don't think you can suddenly decide, "I fancy being in an MC" after watching SoA
