Evening,

I have finally managed to get my brother to get his act together and buy a bike. He's saved a £1k but would like to get cbt paid for out of that too.

Does anyone in here have a 125 for sale?

I'm thinking 4t for reliability. He loves the super Moto type bikes but honestly anything will do as it's the first step in the rung. He 25 so hoping to climb the ladder to a 600.

Thanks,

Bubbs

This to me makes the rest of the post irreverent.

You have £1000, not sure how long it took him to save it but that's more than enough to take a intensive course that will complete all of the following;

- CBT
- Theory
- Module 1
- Module 2

End result = full license and a endless choice of bikes

By doing all of the above under an instructor he will know if bikes are really for him or not, worse comes to worst his got a full license he may be able to use in the future.

Makes no financial sense to even touch a 125, the second hand market for bigger bikes is endless and can pick up anything for pennies in comparison to the modern versions of the bikes.

All in all my advice is.. shop around for local training schools, explain you want to go from scratch and get figures for how much it will cost.. expect £500-700 for a five day full course.

Then once you've got this out of you way he does the following;

- Saves for textiles/leathers
- Saves for a motorbike
- Saves for insurance (get quotes before buying the bike)

You've saved him the costly mistake of doing it step by step as opposed to all in one go, gave him all the experience needed to be safe on the roads and enabled him to ride anything and everything (providing funds allow), if he really wants to get on two wheels it's the route to go down.

Get him to do his test, its cheaper to get decent 500 commuters than it is to get half mashed 125s

Should have added. He needs a bike asap for commuting to work with. Can't afford the time to wait unfortunately.

Plus to be honest I'd prefer him to learn on a 125 first. He's an adrenaline junkie and don't want him to go too mad. You know because 70 on a 125 isn't the same as 70 on a sports bike. Wink

Think I would rather do 70 ona larger bike knowing that as a general rule that suspension brakes etc are better.
125's are fun but limited.
Get him to do DAS and look for a cheap 500/600 bike.
Just because you think he may be a nutter, he may not be.
Also the first time he does something daft will show him that he needs to treat the bike with respect.

That link won't load for some reason.

He can use my kit until he can afford his own

I was in a similar situation, buses took a couple of hours.. bike takes me less than 3/4 of an hour at most.. cuts time down and provides a fair amount of freedom in the process.

I purchased a cheap 125 that has a top speed of about 50-60mph.. so yet to discover what 70mph feels like, not instant acceleration at that though.. so I get your point somewhat.

Anyway.. what about insurance?

Also I got bored of waiting for a cheap bike on Gumtree and decided that purchasing a lexmoto arrow for £850 (Doesn't include the on the road fee, tax and registration) was the fastest option.. might be worth a look?

Although again it's chinese, the money you save vs a CBF or YZF will be spent on upkeep and keeping it clean (just examples of bikes).

Might be worth getting his CBT done first just to ensure his comfortable on a bike, just because it's a cheap method of transport doesn't mean it's for everyone.. better to spend £100 odd and find that out sooner rather than latter?

Have you tried ebay?

Yamaha XTZ125 or Kawasaki D-Tracker125? I like XTZ better for its size (though it has drum bake in rear).

How about let him do his own thing? What would he prefer to do?
He's 25, by that age I imagine you'd be chomping at anybody who tried telling you what do. I would have.

He wants a 125, im trying to find him a 125. I don't see the problem here?!

If no one is selling a 125 then no problem. One person with an actual recommendation, everyone else telling me their thoughts and feelings.. Did I accidentally post this in auntie bcf? Rolling Eyes

It's like taking to my wife.

Ha ha, yeah. Good point.

Actually lots of people being helpful. Just frustration kicks in when a thread starts to skew wildly out of control

What, like getting terribly 'meta' and moving to discussing whether or not the thread was useful?

Very Happy

Exactly, or worse quoting the discussion that was terribly 'meta'

CG125, YBR125, H100, RXS100, KH100/125, GP100, AJS JS125.

All of the above can be had for five hundred ponds or less if you look hard enough, can be insured TPO as it simply won't matter enough to claim if pinched, insurance at around £200...so leaves £300 for CBT, a set of Pilot Sporty's and a lid that fits him.

I reckon if I had to do motoring for £1k then that'd be the way to go. Bonus points for an old 100cc smoker, they're just bloody good fun & so simple to work on. I know you mention four stroke for reliability, the commuter 2t's go quite a long time between service intervals and at worst case a rebuild costs around £20 and takes half an hour, so around as much as an oil and filter change on a four stroke machine Thumbs Up

edit;

Something like this - however I'd want him to knock £100 off asking price

I'd suggest he does a CBT first too
If he likes it, get him that cheap 125 to commute on and get him to
serve his time and get road experience before upgrading

I'm not convinced the newbie Monday 'real biker' Friday DAS approach
makes good riders.
I know and have met a few who have done it and it may get someone a big bike quickly, but you cant buy experience.

Depends what model you're interested in, the arrow has a stock top speed of 52mph.. common to upgrade the front sprocket to either a 16T / 17T.

Personal figures get about 80-85 miles per tank, most I've paid for a full tank was £8-9 at £1.15 per litre.. currently about a £5.

Insurance is also quite cheap although varies between models, the arrow being one of the cheaper options.

If you're only after a quick run around for a couple of years then might be worth the investment, unfortunately build quality is questionable and deprecation is inevitable, as seen with the downpipes on that model.

Wouldn't say that Arrow is my ideal model but is everything I need for the first year on the roads, looking forward if I was to stay chinese I'd be tempted by the Lexmoto ZSX although I'd have to weigh up how different their "flagship model" is in comparison to the arrow, and if the increase in cost is worth it.

The boggy basic commuter models are okay, poor finish and rust badly as such.

It's when they try to be clever with twin cylinder motors, tons of chrome, fancy digital clocks, four pot calipers and USD forks that it all goes to shit. Laughing
