I'm shopping around for my first bike...

1. If you had around £4000 what would you buy for your first ever bike?
2. What in your opinion is a perfect newbie bike that you wish you had or actually have had when you first started?
3. And obviously... What is your DREAM motorcycle?

1) Depends, I started (and still on) 125cc's.. so for £4000, I wouldn't, I'd do what I did and purchase the cheapest "brand new" bike I could find in the Lexmoto range.

If I was on a A2 license I'd buy a bike that meets both the A2 and A requirements, voiding training schools in the event of a license upgrade and saving future costs, 2 in 1.

As for the A.. anything I could afford the upkeep of and to insure.

2) Based on looks a Yamaha YZF R125.. or a balance between looks and cost a Lexmoto ZSX.

Again not on bigger bikes so cannot comment on that.

3) Toss up between;

- Yamaha R6
- Honda Fireblade
- Trimuph street tripple 1050

Whatever was cheap enough to get me through my test.

2. What in your opinion is a perfect newbie bike that you wish you had or actually have had when you first started?
As happy as I was with the CB250RS, the CB500 would have done me for a lot longer.

3. And obviously... What is your DREAM motorcycle?
No-one's made it yet. And unlikely to.

I started off on an FMX650. 30bhp. It was perfect, as I was a noob I thrashed it everywhere and carried out some stupid, stupid shit. I still thought it was the most powerful bike on the planet. Had I have been on a 600cc, who knows what would have happened. Stupid shit would have still happened at much higher speeds.

1.)I'd probably look for a decent NSR125 and keep most of the money.

2.) I'd have had a Mito 125 given a choice.

3.) My current dream bike that is available new is the EBR1190, but if I could have any bike ever I'd probably have an RG500 or similar.

By the way, there is no such thing as a "Street Tripple 1050". The 1050 model is a Speed Triple. The Street Triple is a 675cc bike.

Oh, and dream motorcycle. A 05' GSXR750 in dark blue. This is when I have a secure garage to put it in, though.

Aha, another handy thread! I'm trying to absorb a load of big motorbike info to make a more informed choice when moving up from a 125.

1) Do you mean 125, or as a DAS biggun' to begin with? I got a pretty good one in a Suzuki DR125 SM but others disagree! It's only failed due to a knackered battery and costs peanuts to run, and it's a great commuter if 30/40 mph roads are all that are involved.

2) and 3) Bugger knows, but I may have a better idea thanks to threads like this Thumbs Up

Since I was 16 when I got my first bike. A Simson S51 or a Kreidler lf. I would have a lot of change.

Assuming just passed a full motorcycle test. Thinking Could do a lot worse than an ER6.

1 - Triumph Street Triple R. Bought one as my first bike and loved it, regret selling it.
2 - Triumph Street Triple R again. Incredibly easy to ride, perfect amount of power and sportyness to be fun, fast, easy to use and not a kitten killing rainforest decimating murdercycle.
3 - Mondial Piega or a Ducati Diavel Carbon Red. One is a bike I'd never use, one is a bike I'd never stop using.

1. Dunno, no new bikes taking my fancy.
2. AR80 with all speed exhaust (my mate had one and it used to rev all the way round the clocks, happy days)
3. As for a dream bike, either RGV250 with an RG500 lump shoe horned in, Mito Evo with a 350 YPVS engine (might be a theme here, has anyone put a 350 lump into an R125 frame yet?) or pre-unit wideline framed Triton
