New charity ride idea - 1000 MILES FOR 1000 POUNDS

I'm thinking of trying to get a new charity ride event off the ground and I thought I'd run it by the folks in my favourite forum first. Let me know your views.

The idea is in its infancy so practicalities need ironing output the format is something like this:

You have a budget of max £1000. You have to travel 1000 miles. No time limit, except say max a week. With that money, you need to source and buy the bike, pay for any work it needs beforehand (or take the chance that it might not) and pay for petrol, accommodation, food etc. So the longer you take, the more it costs. Perhaps a minimum of two overnights to add to the challenge.

There would be a min/max CC to make it competitive and challenging in terms of price point and comfort.

There would be another handicap, perhaps to carry around some large and cumbersome item all the way, and keep it dry and safe.

Entrants would have to hit say three or four checkpoints at least 300 miles apart each to avoid going round and round the M25 for 1000 miles.

Winner is whoever comes in most under budget

There would be an entry fee (£30? £50?) which would be the charity donation. If it gathers pace then more entrants = more money. I was thinking it could go to Riders for Health or Serv or Air Ambulance -but perhaps it could go to the winner's chosen charity.

I know that a grand is a lot but to be honest people pay shed loads more to ride around Africa or trek up a mountain. If it can be made challenging and fun then maybe it could work with the right rules.

Nothing to stop you fundraising for your grand if you can persuade people to give you cash, but then money raised from donors should go to the charity at the end.

1000 miles for a grand is too easy! Just looking at my current selection of bikes I have at least 5 easily capable and ready to go that would do it for half that
